Remember when a movie’s theatrical run felt like an event that stretched for months before you could watch it at home? That era is quietly disappearing. Audiences now expect new releases to land on their preferred screen almost immediately, and the entertainment industry has spent the last few years scrambling to keep up with that shift.

This isn’t just about convenience anymore. It’s about a fundamentally different relationship between viewers and the content they want to consume, one shaped by years of on-demand everything.

The Shrinking Gap Between Theaters and Streaming

The theatrical exclusivity window used to be sacred. Back in 2017, a 90-day theatrical run was standard practice across the industry, giving cinemas months of breathing room before films hit home video or streaming.

That number has collapsed. Many studios now push for something closer to 45 days, and some films have moved to on-demand platforms in 40 days or less. The result shows up clearly in viewer behavior: three-quarters of U.S. adults said they watched a new movie on streaming instead of in a theater at least once in the past year, according to a 2025 AP-NORC poll. Waiting has become the exception, not the rule.

How Day-and-Date Releases Changed Viewer Habits

Day-and-date releases, where a film debuts in theaters and on streaming simultaneously, have trained audiences to expect choice rather than delay. If a movie is available everywhere at once, the pressure to rush to a cinema evaporates. Viewers now treat theatrical exclusivity as a courtesy rather than a requirement.

This mindset extends well beyond film releases. Consumers across industries have grown accustomed to platforms that prioritize speed and low friction, whether that means instant playback, same-day delivery, or rapid transaction processing. Games aren’t purchased in hard copy anymore (Sony won’t even release them in that format starting 2028) but we just click and buy them online. We stream songs directly from Spotify and Deezer. Even fringe activities, like poker and blackjack, are now available within a second. The fastest paying online casinos attract users with immediate transactions and no-waiting registration. Such expectations of near-instant service have become a baseline across digital entertainment and beyond, not an exception limited to streaming video.

Speed as a Selling Point Across Digital Entertainment

Entertainment companies have noticed and adjusted their strategies accordingly. Speed itself has become a marketing angle, not just an operational detail. Studios now advertise shortened windows as a feature, framing quick home access as a benefit rather than a compromise.

The business risks of this shift are real, though. When Netflix moved to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery’s studio and streaming operations in a deal reported at $72 billion, questions immediately surfaced about what that consolidation might mean for theatrical exhibition going forward. Reporting on the deal noted concerns that further streaming consolidation could squeeze traditional theaters even as some studios simultaneously commit to preserving wider theatrical runs for select releases. The industry is still negotiating exactly how much exclusivity audiences will tolerate before turning fully toward at-home viewing.

What Faster Access Means for Future Releases

Despite the streaming surge, theaters haven’t disappeared, and moviegoing habits remain more layered than headlines sometimes suggest. About two-thirds of Americans still reported watching a recently released movie in a theater within the past year, even as streaming usage climbs. Frequency matters here too, since only 16% of Americans said they went to theaters at least monthly for new releases, showing that occasional theatrical trips coexist with heavy streaming reliance.

Recent research on moviegoing habits ahead of awards season reinforces that theatrical attendance remains tied to specific occasions, like awards contenders or major franchise releases, rather than routine entertainment consumption. Going forward, expect studios to keep testing hybrid release strategies, balancing shorter exclusivity windows with selective theatrical showcases for prestige titles. Instant access has become the default expectation, but the theatrical experience still holds cultural weight for the releases that matter most to audiences.
