Twenty-five years after it first tore onto the streets of Los Angeles, The Fast and the Furious is heading back to theaters.

Universal Pictures has released a new anniversary trailer celebrating the film that kicked off one of the biggest action franchises in movie history, and for longtime fans, it’s a reminder of just how different the series looked when it first started.

Originally released in June 2001, The Fast and the Furious introduced audiences to street racer Dominic Toretto and undercover cop Brian O’Conner, launching a saga that would eventually grow into a global phenomenon.

What began as a relatively grounded street racing thriller evolved into a franchise that has earned more than $7 billion worldwide across 11 films and multiple spin-offs.

Universal reflected on the franchise’s incredible run, saying: “Over the course of 11 films that have stoked passion in an ever-expanding audience and have earned more than $7 billion U.S. at the worldwide box office, Universal’s record-smashing, homegrown Fast & Furious Saga has become the studio’s most-profitable and longest-running franchise.”

As part of the anniversary celebration, the film was screened at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and will now return to theaters nationwide on August 21, 2026, giving fans another chance to experience it where it belongs: on the big screen.

While the franchise would eventually become known for increasingly outrageous action sequences, many fans still appreciate the original film for its more grounded approach.

The racing felt real, the stakes were personal, and the practical driving sequences helped establish a style that many of the later entries would build upon. There’s a raw energy to the movie that still holds up all these years later.

The film’s official synopsis reads: “They’ve got the adrenaline rush and the mean machines, but most of all, they’ve got the extreme need for speed. On the turbo-charged streets of Los Angeles, every night is a championship race.

“With nitro-boosted fury, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), rules the road turning all his challengers into dust. He and his rival, Johnny Tran (Rick Yune) are the boldest, the baddest and the best.

“But there’s new rage on the road. They know he’s tough, they know he’s fast, but what they don’t know is that he’s a speed demon detective (Paul Walker) with enough drive and determination to come out the winner.

“With intense full-throttle action, awesome high-speed stunts, and full-on pedal to the metal intensity, this fast and furious assault puts you in the driver’s seat & dares you to exceed all limits.”

The film was directed by Rob Cohen, who was coming off The Skulls and would go on to direct xXx the following year. The screenplay was written by Gary Scott Thompson, Erik Bergquist, and David Ayer, based on Ken Li’s magazine article Racer X. Longtime franchise producer Neal H. Moritz also helped bring the project to life.

With another Fast & Furious sequel currently scheduled for 2028, the franchise isn’t slowing down anytime soon. But before the next chapter arrives, fans will have the chance to revisit the movie that started it all.

Whether you were there opening weekend in 2001 or discovered the franchise years later, seeing The Fast and the Furious back on the big screen should be a blast!
