Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Starfighter just hit a major milestone, and director Shawn Levy is the one delivering the good news. The upcoming Star Wars movie has officially wrapped filming and is now heading into post-production, putting it firmly on course for its 2027 theatrical release.
Levy shared the update on Instagram, confirming that cameras stopped rolling after production kicked off back in August.
Set after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Starfighter is expected to explore a largely new corner of the franchise. The story is being kept tightly under wraps, but Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has previously said the film will focus on mostly new characters, while leaving the door open for a few familiar faces from the sequel era to potentially return.
The movie is led by Ryan Gosling, alongside Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
Levy previously explained the creative freedom he’s been given on the project, saying, “There is no mandate or interference [from Lucasfilm] other than the constant encouragement, ‘Make this new.’ And that’s the truth.
“Every time I’ve asked, ‘Should I use this character that was maybe in that movie?’ Every time it’s, ‘You know what? People have seen that. Do something new.’…So far, I’ve had more freedom on this movie: it’s equal to any other movie I’ve made, including the original movies like Free Guy and The Adam Project, where it was based on no legacy. So, so far, it’s very, very liberating.”
With Levy leaning into originality and Lucasfilm backing that approach, this movie could end up feeling very different from what fans are used to, while still living firmly within the Star Wars universe.
Star Wars: Starfighter is currently scheduled to arrive in United States theaters on May 28, 2027. Before that, fans will get another big-screen adventure with The Mandalorian and Grogu.
