The Star Wars Jedi games have arguably been two of the better original entries into the franchise in any medium in recent years, as the story of Cal Kestis continues to enthrall both longtime fans of the series and those who were brought into the fold by the games themselves.
If you haven’t played it yet, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is not a true open-world game, but rather a semi-open or wide-linear experience that really puts the onus on the narrative, rather than the wider setting. Despite this working very well so far, conversations around whether the next game should be truly open-world are ongoing, but a lot of fans are not convinced that would be the right play.
Will Star Wars Jedi 3 Be Open World?
Over on Reddit, one player shared their contention that the next game in the Jedi series should be open-world, and it’s safe to say that fans were very much divided on that idea, particularly given how good the first two games have been without that dynamic.
“I mean, if that is the developer’s plan/vision… Sure. But it definitely doesn’t need to be open-world. In fact, I would be content if the game was scaled down to be more like Fallen Order (which was also a huge game). I just want the best possible story, new character arcs, and I want the gameplay to be top-notch. We already have Outlaws for an open-world Star Wars experience,” one player said.
“I loathe an open-world in everything. Tell a tight, concise story. I don’t need meaningless side quests,” another added.
Another post on a different forum contended a little differently, asking for continuity from the developer. It was certainly a position that had plenty of backing, even with some caveats.
“Yeah, but I would like more freaky planets. FO and JS locations look almost like different parts of Earth. There are small parts that are creative and original, but most not so much,” one comment read.
“Personally, I’d rather have multiple planets with smaller maps and diverse biomes than bigger maps and less planets. I’m hoping we get a tropical biome and a temperate forest (maybe Alderaan?) biome in the next game,” another claimed.
When Is Star Wars Jedi 3 Coming?
The third game in the Star Wars Jedi series is actively under development at Respawn Entertainment, though we don’t yet have confirmation on anything from the developer themselves. Most are predicting a 2027 release window, though there is a world in which it could release before the year is out, however unlikely that might be.
