Hold onto your broomsticks because things are officially lifting off for Practical Magic 2. Star Nicole Kidman confirmed on Instagram that the sequel to the 1998 whimsigoth contemporary fantasy has wrapped filming. She said in the caption, “That’s a wrap on #PracticalMagic2! Thank you to the cast & crew for all your magic ✨” accompanied by a video of her and Sandra Bullock walking through a field bathed in sunlight. Filming wraps just 5 days shy of a year out from the expected release date of September 18, 2026. The sequel is set to be based on The Book of Magic also by Practical Magic author Alice Hoffman. In addition to Kidman and Bullock, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest return for the sequel. Lee Pace (Foundation), Xolo Maridueña (Blue Beetle), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), and Solly McLeod (The Dead Don’t Hurt) are also a part of the sequel’s cast.
The ‘Practical Magic’ Sequel Will Be “Faithful”
At the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, Kidman took time to tease what to expect from the upcoming sequel. One of her most recent projects,Babygirl, she says couldn’t be more different. “It has something very different to say.” Kidman calls the sequel “fun and witchy” which just about sum up the first movie as well, giving fans faith that this sequel will measure up. She explains:
“I think [fans are] going to be very pleased. We’re going to be very faithful. We’re cognizant to how important those characters and that movie are to so many people. We’re not going to reinvent the wheel. We’re going to draw from Alice Hoffman’s books, as the first movie did, and we’re going to be true to the chronology of how many years later it is.”
The sequel will be directed by Susanne Bier, original writer Akiva Goldsman, and original producer, Denise Di Novi, both return for the sequel back for the project. The plot for The Book of Magic, the novel, follows one of Sally’s daughters as a young adult, grappling with love woes as the curse on the Owens women continues. In the first film, Sally and Gillian (Bullock and Kidman) were able to rid themselves of the curse, but maybe it wasn’t permanent? Kidman explains they’ll draw from Hoffman’s books, so maybe there’s a new curse plaguing the Owens women that they’ll have to contend with in order to go on with their lives.
