A 10-episode science fiction miniseries on Netflix is so good that it was recently promoted into a full, multi-season show. While Netflix is best known for either multi-season shows like Stranger Things and Wednesday or for canceling shows prematurely, the streamer also has a fair range of great limited series. Some of the best shows on Netflix, in fact, were planned out as a single, standalone season that told a complete story, like The Haunting of Hill House.
One of the absolute best limited series on Netflix is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which takes place in the same world as the Cyberpunk 2077 video game and Cyberpunk TTRPG. As the name suggests, Edgerunners is an animated sci-fi cyberpunk show that follows David Martinez as he dives headfirst into the world of illegal mercenary work and extremely dangerous cybernetic implants, all while seeking revenge against the mega-corporations that rule Night City.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is, simply put, one of the best miniseries on Netflix. It boasts 100% approval with critics and 95% approval with viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, it revitalized Cyberpunk 2077 after its notoriously buggy launch, and it got untold thousands of viewers hooked on the franchise. It’s a remarkably beautiful and tragic story that transcends its genre, and it’s widely regarded as one of the greatest anime series ever made.
It’s clear to see why Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is so beloved, but even with its popularity, a sequel seemed out of the question. The show was marketed as a miniseries, and the ending of Edgerunners brought a very definitive conclusion to the story of David and his friends. Despite being marketed, written, and delivered as a one-season miniseries, however, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was too good to end.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Is Making The Miniseries Into An Anthology
Now, almost four years after Cyberpunk: Edgerunners finished its first and only season, the show is coming back for more. CD Projekt Red, the creators of Cyberpunk 2077, announced last year that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will be premiering on Netflix in the fall of 2026. Despite being titled as a sequel, however, Edgerunners 2 won’t be continuing David Martinez’s story.
Instead, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is telling a new, standalone story with new characters by using the show’s animation style and the same setting. Four new characters have been revealed so far: Weak, a “washed-up cyberpunk legend,” D, a “deadly nomad,” Roman, a young boy who aspires to be a documentarian, and Talia, a member of the cybernetic-obsessed Maelstrom gang.
David is dead. But Night City lives on.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077— a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?
Clearly, Edgerunners season 1 was such a hit that CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger decided that returning to the show was worth it. Now, instead of being a single-season miniseries, Edgerunners is becoming something closer to an anthology series, with each season following a new cast in a new story, tied together only by Night City. Only time will tell if Edgerunners ends up becoming a fully-fledged anthology with multiple seasons, but it certainly seems like a possibility.
There’s Never Been A Better Time To Watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
With Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 just a few months away from its Fall 2026 release window, there’s never been a better time to watch the show’s first season. While the two seasons won’t be directly connected, David Martinez’s story is a perfect introduction to Night City and the Cyberpunk franchise as a whole. Watching Edgerunners season 1 can introduce new viewers to the same chrome, slang, mega-corporations and gangs that Edgerunners 2 will undoubtedly center around.
Plus, Edgerunners season 1 is just a great show on its own. As previously mentioned, David’s story is one of the most gripping and tragically beautiful shows ever made. It has intense action, a melancholy romance story, heart-wrenching emotional stakes, beautfiul animation, and basically everything you could want out of a sci-fi series. Getting acquainted with the world of Edgerunners 2 is just a bonus; the real treat is getting to watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
