Movie monsters, killer robots, extraterrestrial hunters, and dinosaurs that changed filmmaking forever all have one thing in common.

They came to life through the incredible imagination and craftsmanship of Stan Winston. Now, one of Hollywood’s greatest special effects artists is finally getting the documentary treatment he deserves.

According to Deadline, production is officially underway on Monster Maker, a new documentary from director and producer Barney Douglas (McEnroe) that will explore Winston’s remarkable career and the lasting impact he had on modern cinema.

The documentary will take audiences through the career of the legendary creature creator whose work forever changed blockbuster filmmaking. The official description reads:

“From the Terminator emerging from flames, to the Predator removing its mask and the groundbreaking dinosaurs of Jurassic Park, many of cinema’s most iconic characters and creature effects were created by Stan Winston and his team.

“Through never-before-seen archive material, behind the scenes footage of iconic Hollywood movies, and interviews with family, friends, and collaborators including James Cameron, Monster Maker tells the story of the visionary artist whose work helped define modern blockbuster filmmaking.”

For movie fans, that’s a pretty exciting promise. Winston’s work didn’t simply help create unforgettable creatures, it helped make audiences believe they were real. His practical effects and creature designs raised the bar for what filmmakers could accomplish long before digital effects became the industry standard.

The documentary will feature newly filmed interviews with filmmaker James Cameron, who collaborated with Winston on classics including The Terminator and Aliens. Producer Frank Marshall, former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and actor Jeff Goldblum will also share their memories, including Goldblum’s experience filming Jurassic Park alongside “Winston’s cantankerous Tyrannosaurus Rex.”

Winston passed away in 2008 at the age of 62, but his influence is still everywhere. During his legendary career, he earned four Academy Awards and built an incredible filmography that includes the Terminator, Jurassic Park, Predator, and Alien franchises.

His creative talents also extended to films such as The Relic, Pandorum, and Avatar. Winston even stepped into the director’s chair with the cult horror favorite Pumpkinhead.

The project also brings together an impressive producing team. Marshall serves as producer alongside Tamzin Merchant, Paddy Kelly, and Steve Williams for Strange Bird.

Drew Masters and Chris Grubb executive produce for Whisper, while Dogwoof co-produces with Anna Godas, Oli Harbottle, and Will Kane serving as executive producers. Keith Haviland also executive produces for Haviland Digital.

For generations of movie fans, Stan Winston’s creations are some of the most unforgettable characters ever put on screen. Whether it was a terrifying Predator, a relentless T-800, or dinosaurs that looked astonishingly alive, his artistry left an unforgettable mark on Hollywood.

Monster Maker is sure to be a fitting tribute to the artist whose imagination gave us some of cinema’s greatest movie monsters, heroes, and creatures.
