When you hear that Mike Flanagan is taking on Carrie, it’s easy to assume you already know exactly where it’s headed. After all, Stephen King’s first novel has become one of the most recognizable horror stories ever, with multiple adaptations already bringing its infamous prom night to life.
But if you think you know every beat of what’s coming, Flanagan has a message for you: you probably don’t.
Throughout his career, Flanagan has built a reputation for taking familiar material and finding fresh ways to tell those stories. Whether it was The Haunting of Hill House, The Fall of the House of Usher, or his Stephen King adaptations Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, and The Life of Chuck, he has consistently found new angles that surprise even longtime fans.
That approach is carrying over to his upcoming eight-episode Carrie limited series, which premieres on Prime Video this October.
Speaking with ComicBook during San Diego Comic-Con, Flanagan was asked how he approaches recreating one of horror’s most famous sequences when audiences already know exactly what happens at the prom.
His answer was unexpected. “It’s one of my favorite things about this project, because this is one of the first times in my career I can honestly say you don’t. But it’s one of those things everyone thinks they do. I thought I did.”
He went on to explain that while audiences know the broad strokes of Carrie, they may not know nearly as much as they think.
“That’s the thing about Carrie. You know Carrie is going to the prom, but do you know how? And I think, you know, what was really cool about this is that we got to build something quite new out of these expected materials, and something that would be the foundation in another adaptation… in our house is just the aluminum siding.”
That philosophy fits perfectly with Flanagan’s track record. His adaptation of Doctor Sleep managed to blend King’s novel with Stanley Kubrick’s iconic vision of The Shining, creating something that respected both versions while also delivering the ending King had always wanted.
It sounds like Carrie is getting a similar treatment. Flanagan revealed that the series lets viewers know almost immediately that this isn’t simply a recreation of the story they’ve seen before. In the very first episode, Siena Agudong’s Sue Snell tells the audience exactly what Flanagan has been hinting at all along:
“Everyone thinks they know what happened at the prom, but you don’t.”
That idea becomes one of the central themes driving the series forward, setting the expectation that familiar moments may unfold in very unfamiliar ways. And yes, the prom is still happening. It just won’t be the version horror fans know. As Flanagan explained:
“I will say that we go to the prom because of course we do, but it’s a version of the prom no one’s ever seen. Our prom takes us out of the gym, of course, but also takes us out into a much bigger world that I don’t think Stephen King certainly hadn’t laid the groundwork for back in the 70s. And I think that DePalma never would have imagined for his adaptation. So it’s really exciting.”
That’s a pretty intriguing tease. The prom massacre is one of horror’s defining moments, so expanding its scope beyond the familiar gymnasium could completely change how audiences experience the story.
It also sounds like Flanagan isn’t interested in replacing what came before. Instead, he’s using those familiar pieces as the starting point for something that can stand alongside the previous adaptations while carving out its own identity.
If his previous Stephen King projects are any indication, longtime readers and fans of the classic films should probably expect a few surprises along the way.
