The world of John Wick continues to expand, and the latest addition to the franchise has brought in one of Hollywood’s rising young stars. Mason Thames has officially joined Lionsgate’s upcoming John Wick spinoff Caine, which will be directed by and star martial arts icon Donnie Yen.
While Lionsgate is keeping details about Thames’ character under wraps, his casting adds another intriguing piece to a project that already has fans excited.
Thames joins a cast that includes Yen, Rina Sawayama, who returns as Akira from John Wick: Chapter 4, and Dacre Montgomery, whose involvement was previously announced.
The film will pick up after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, following Caine after he has finally been released from his obligations to the High Table. Beyond that, story details remain a mystery, but with Yen steering the project both in front of and behind the lens, expectations are understandably high.
One of the most exciting aspects of Caine is the promise that it will reflect Yen’s unique approach to action filmmaking. Throughout his career, he has become known for combining expertly crafted fight choreography with strong emotional character arcs, a style showcased in films such as Ip Man, Flash Point, and Hero.
That creative influence is expected to shape the next chapter of the John Wick universe in a way that feels distinct while still fitting within the franchise’s established world.
The film is currently in production and is being produced by longtime John Wick architects Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee through Thunder Road, alongside Chad Stahelski through 87Eleven Entertainment.
Keanu Reeves is also onboard as a producer alongside John Saunders. Yen will serve as an executive producer in addition to starring and directing, with Courtney Brock also executive producing.
The screenplay comes from Mattson Tomlin, whose recent high-profile projects include The Batman: Part II and the adaptation of BRZRKR, the comic book created by Reeves, alongside Michael McGrale.
As for Thames, the young actor continues to build an impressive résumé. He recently wrapped production on How to Train Your Dragon 2, the sequel to the live-action adaptation of the beloved animated franchise.
Audiences will also see him in the upcoming Green Day-inspired film Nimrods and Macon Blair’s feature Idiots, where he stars alongside Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson Jr. Of course, many genre fans already know him as the breakout star of The Black Phone franchise.
