Bassic principles

Jimpster has been telling Juno Daily how he decided to return to his roots – albeit with a contemporary twist – for his latest EP ‘Bassic Rollers’.
The four-track EP, which marks his first full release since the highly regarded ‘The Phoenix’ EP on Nu Groove, sees him distilling decades of dancefloor knowledge into four deeply musical club weapons.
Opener ‘Out And About is said to be inspired by his recent gigs in South Africa, a proper late night roller, ‘Heads Down’ nudges the BPMs up and draws inspiration from late 90s club culture like the influential Space nights at London’s Bar Rhumba, ‘Crispy Pancakes’ takes a sharp turn into mutant disco territory and ‘Far Side’ lowers the tempo for a sublime slice of deep disco house.
“My ‘Bassic Rollers’ EP really came from wanting to strike a balance between stripping things back to the essence of what’s always driven me but with one eye on the future,” he tells Juno Daily. “That low-end pressure and groove that works on a proper soundsystem – dusty samples, crunchy drums… but with contemporary production from the present day. After 30 years of making records, it felt right to reflect on my roots whilst giving DJ’s and listeners something raw but still musical.”

“I’ve been juggling a few different projects lately including more Loxodrome releases and some remixes for the likes of Laroye and Atjazz & Fred Everything. I’m still loving DJing regularly but spending plenty of time in the studio refining ideas, and continuing to build the identity of Jimpster and Freerange. There’s a real energy around the label right now that feeds directly into my own productions.
“We’ve got a strong run of releases lined up on Freerange over the coming months, with music from both new artists and long-time family. It’s important for us to keep evolving while staying true to that deep house foundation the label’s always been about.
“This year is a big one – 30 years of Freerange! We’re planning a series of special EP’s and 30 Years Boxset plus events and re-issues to celebrate the journey. It’s not just about looking back, but pushing forward and setting the tone for the next chapter.”
