For decades, Masters of the Universe fans have watched Skeletor scheme, rage, and chase ultimate power across Eternia. He’s one of the most iconic villains in pop culture, but his true beginnings have always been a bit murky.

That’s about to change with a brand-new comic series is stepping in to explore where Skeletor really came from, and it looks like it’s going to dig deeper than ever before.

Mattel and Dark Horse Comics have announced Masters of the Universe: Genesis, a 12-issue series that will explore the history of Eternia through its most legendary characters. Kicking things off is Skeletor himself, with the first three issues dedicated to unraveling his past.

The creative team includes Rich Douek writing, Gavin Smith on art, Fabi Marques handling colors, and AndWorld Design on lettering. The debut issue will feature a main cover by Mark Buckingham and a variant cover by Lee Bermejo.

Skeletor’s origin has always been one of the franchise’s biggest mysteries, and that’s part of what has made him so compelling. Over the years, fans have seen several different takes on who he was before becoming the skull-faced tyrant.

The original cartoon hinted that he came from another dimension. The 2002 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series introduced the idea that he was once Keldor, whose transformation came after being splashed with acid.

Then the 2012 DC Comics run added another layer, suggesting Skeletor was actually the overlooked heir to Eternia’s throne, passed over by King Miro in favor of Randor. Later, Masters of the Universe Revelation built on that version, portraying Prince Keldor as a student of Hordak who wielded the Havoc Staff, leading to the horrific transformation that defined his look.

Each version has its fans, but none of them have completely filled in the gaps. Some aren’t even considered canon anymore, which leaves a lot of room for Genesis to carve out a definitive take or at least something that feels more complete.

Here’s the official description for the first issue, which gives a clear sense of the direction they’re heading:

“Discover the origins of your favorite heroes and villains with Masters of the Universe: Genesis! In issue #1 we meet Skeletor—a power-hungry demon-mage determined to seize control of Castle Grayskull, conquer Eternia, and become Master of the Universe!

“The first arc of Genesis is written by Rich Douek (Superman Red & Blue, Edge of Spider-Verse) and illustrated by Gavin Smith (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Zord Quest).”

While the description leans hard into Skeletor’s ambition and power, the real hook is seeing how he became that figure in the first place. If this series commits to exploring his early life in detail, it could end up redefining how fans see the character moving forward.

Masters of the Universe: Genesis #1 hits comic shops on August 5, 2026.
