I’m a huge fan of the Evil Dead franchise. Ever since Sam Raimi introduced audiences to the necronomicon in the cabin in the wood, I’ve loved everything that’s come out of this Franchise.

Some are better than others, sure, but I’ve genuinely enjoyed them all. So naturally, I was pumped to see what Evil Dead Burn had to offer.

After finally watching it, I can tell you this movie is absolutely unhinged. Seriously… Evil Dead Burn is one of the most savage entries this franchise has ever produced. It’s ridiculously violent. It’s ridiculously bloody. It’s incredibly graphic, and there were several moments where I found myself thinking, “Okay… wow… they’re actually going there.”

Then it somehow found another level. The movie just keeps escalating until it becomes this nonstop parade of blood, gore, smashed skulls, mangled bodies, and some seriously disturbing imagery.

There are sequences that made me physically cringe, not because they were bad, but because they were so over-the-top disgusting that I couldn’t help but squirm. As someone who’s watched horror movies his entire life, I always appreciate it when a movie can still surprise me with something that makes me react.

What I really appreciated was that director Sébastien Vaniček completely commits to the insanity. There isn’t any hesitation. Once the horror starts, the movie stomps on the accelerator and refuses to let up.

The pacing is fast, the camera is constantly moving, and the entire film feels like it’s sprinting toward absolute chaos. It has this explosive energy that keeps carrying you from one horrifying set piece to the next.

There are some fantastic shots throughout the movie, too. Vaniček clearly understands how to make Evil Dead look and feel like Evil Dead. The frantic camerawork, the aggressive movement, the gruesome practical effects, and the creative kills all feel right at home in this universe.

There were several sequences that had me smiling simply because they were so outrageously nasty. If you’re a horror fan who lives for practical gore effects, this movie serves up plenty of nightmare fuel. The practical effects team deserves a standing ovation because they absolutely went for it.

As much as I enjoyed the movie, though, it also reminded me of something I’ve been missing from this franchise for a while now. I miss the fun.

That’s probably my biggest takeaway after watching Evil Dead Burn. I realized I don’t just love Evil Dead because it’s horrifying. I love it because Raimi found this perfect balance between horror and comedy that nobody else has really been able to recreate.

Those original films were creepy and horrific, but they also had this twisted sense of humor that made them endlessly entertaining. It’s why I still love rewatching those original films. That’s been missing for the last few movies.

Evil Dead Burn has tiny moments of dark humor, but that’s very different from the playful horror-comedy that helped define the franchise. This movie isn’t interested in giving you a breather.

It wants you uncomfortable from beginning to end. Everybody is miserable. Everybody is carrying emotional baggage. Everybody is dealing with trauma before the Deadites even show up, and once they do, life gets infinitely worse.

That approach obviously works for the story they’re telling, but after three movies that have leaned this heavily into bleak horror, I’m ready for the franchise to loosen up again.

Give me another character with some real personality. Give me somebody who fights back with a little attitude. Give me another Ash-like wildcard who makes the insanity even crazier. I miss seeing that version of Evil Dead.

The characters here are perfectly fine, but they also feel very familiar. The modern films have settled into a pattern where every protagonist is carrying some deep emotional pain, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, it does make everyone start blending together after a while.

Nobody really jumps off the screen with the kind of personality that made characters from the earlier films so memorable.

That doesn’t hurt the movie too much because the horror is doing so much heavy lifting, but I definitely found myself wishing there was someone with a little more charisma to latch onto.

I also ran into a few story moments that made me stop and question what was happening. I won’t spoil anything because this is definitely a movie that’s more fun when you go in blind, but there are a handful of character decisions that simply don’t make much sense.

There are situations where people know enough to make smarter choices, yet they do the exact opposite because the plot needs another horrific or gross-out cringy sequence to happen. When you watch it, you’ll probably know exactly which moments I’m talking about.

Did those scenes ruin the movie? Not at all. Sometimes horror movies ask you to shrug your shoulders and go with it. That’s exactly what I did here because honestly, once the blood starts flying again, it’s hard to stay irritated for very long.

Even though this isn’t my favorite Evil Dead film, I enjoyed it. It’s mean, relentless, disgusting, exhausting, and there are some wild moments that will make you cringe in disgust.

If you’re looking for a horror movie that absolutely refuses to play it safe, Evil Dead Burn delivers. It pushes the violence to absurd levels, gives horror fans some incredibly creative nightmare fuel, and keeps the franchise’s reputation for outrageous gore alive and well.

I honestly think fans are going to be split on this one. If you’ve loved the darker direction these newer Evil Dead movies have taken, there’s a really good chance you’re going to love this movie.

If you’ve been hoping the series would recapture some of that manic horror-comedy energy from the Raimi era, you might walk away feeling the same way I did. Happy… but also a little nostalgic.

At the end of the day, Evil Dead Burn absolutely gave me the Evil Dead fix I was looking for. It isn’t my favorite chapter in the franchise, but it’s still a savage, blood-soaked roller coaster that reminded me why I keep coming back to these movies.

Now let’s just get a little more of that twisted, playful chaos back next time. Because chainsaws, Deadites, gallons of blood, and a little bit of crazy humor have always been the secret sauce that made Evil Dead one of the greatest horror franchises ever created.
