The Evil Dead franchise has built its reputation on pushing horror fans to their limits with outrageous gore and shocking violence. From chainsaws and severed limbs to some of the most stomach-turning practical effects ever put on screen, the series has always found new ways to make audiences squirm. But it sounds like Evil Dead Burn may be taking things even further.

According to director Sébastien Vaniček, the upcoming horror film featured a sequence so extreme that it had to be removed in order to secure the R-rating the filmmakers were aiming for in the United States.

Speaking in the latest issue of SFX Magazine (Via GamesRadar+), Vaniček revealed that one particular scene crossed a line that ratings boards simply weren’t going to accept.

“There is a scene that is not R-rated. It’s a really, really hard scene. And I have to cut it, unfortunately, so you just won’t experience it as brutally as it is right now because I need to have the R-rated movie. So we are trying to find a good balance.”

At the time of the interview, Vaniček was still working through the Motion Picture Association ratings process. The goal was always to land an R-rating in the U.S., keeping the film in line with the rest of the franchise while still delivering the gruesome carnage fans expect.

What makes this revelation especially interesting is the fact that previous Evil Dead movies already featured some truly horrific imagery.

Evil Dead Rise included the infamous cheese grater sequence that had audiences cringing in theaters, while the 2013 Evil Dead remake featured a brutal moment involving an electric carving knife and a self-amputation.

Despite their graphic content, both films still managed to receive R-ratings in the United States and 18 ratings in the UK.

If Evil Dead Burn contained something that went beyond what those movies showed, horror fans can probably start imagining just how nasty and savage the footage must have been.

The new film centers on a grieving woman who recently lost her husband. Seeking comfort and support, she visits her in-laws at their isolated family home. Unfortunately, things spiral into a nightmare when the infamous Book of the Dead unleashes its evil once again, transforming family members into Deadites one after another.

While Evil Dead Burn isn’t a direct sequel to Evil Dead Rise, eagle-eyed fans noticed a fun nod to the 2023 film in the movie’s first trailer, suggesting the franchise is still keeping subtle connections alive between its stories.

The good news for gorehounds is that the cut footage may not stay hidden forever. Vaniček is already talking about the possibility of releasing a more intense version of the movie after its theatrical run, saying: “The director’s cut will be way more violent than what we will have in the theater.”

Evil Dead Burn hits theaters on July 10, and it already sounds like one of the year’s most intense horror releases. I can’t wait to see it!
