For years, millions of viewers watched the Gosselin family navigate life in front of reality television cameras.
Now, one of the show’s most talked-about stars is preparing to tell his side of the story.
Collin Gosselin is set to release a memoir this fall that promises to revisit painful chapters from his childhood, revisit longstanding family disputes, and reveal experiences he claims were hidden from public view.
Collin Gosselin’s upcoming memoir, “In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood,” is scheduled for release on October 13. According to promotional material from the publisher, the book will delve into what it calls the darker realities behind the family’s public image.
According to Page Six, the publisher says the memoir contains the “never-before-told story of how [Collin] escaped and found his way back from the dark.”
The description goes even further, stating, “This is a reckoning with the dark side of fame: the systems, the entourage, and the institutions that allowed one boy to be erased.”
Among the experiences teased in the book are accounts of “being held down, the basement cell where he was hidden for years and the cocktail of powerful antipsychotics forced on an 11-year-old boy.”
Another passage referenced in the book’s announcement describes a “Christmas morning where the gifts were reclaimed as soon as the cameras went down.”
The cover itself has already attracted attention, featuring a childhood image of Kate Gosselin appearing to place her hand over Collin’s mouth.
Reality TV Fame And A Family Divided
The Gosselin family became household names through TLC’s “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” which documented the lives of Jon and Kate Gosselin and their eight children.
Following the couple’s divorce, the series was rebranded as “Kate Plus 8“ and remained on television until 2017.
The family includes sextuplets Aaden, Joel, Alexis, Hannah, Leah, and Collin, along with twins Cara and Madelyn.
Family tensions became increasingly public after Jon Gosselin was granted sole custody of Collin in 2018. Hannah later moved in with her father as well.
Over the years, Collin has publicly accused his mother of abuse and exploitation, making allegations that have included being restrained, isolated, and institutionalized. Kate Gosselin has repeatedly denied those accusations.
The family conflict deepened when sister Madelyn publicly defended her mother in 2023, accusing Collin of “physical violence” and “hate speech.” Both Collin and Jon have denied those allegations.
Collin Gosselin Says Cameras Missed The Truth
Speaking with Us Weekly about the upcoming release, Collin explained why he finally decided to tell his story.
While acknowledging that much of his childhood unfolded in front of television audiences, he argued that key details remained hidden.
According to Collin, “much of [what went on] was deliberately kept hidden.”
He added, “Finally, I’m sharing what was really happening behind the scenes. This book is about truth, survival, resilience and finding my voice after years of being silenced.”
Collin said he hopes his experiences may help others facing difficult situations.
“If my story helps even one person feel less alone or gives them the courage to tell their own, then every difficult page was worth writing,” he continued.
The reality star also revealed why he waited so long to speak publicly.
“I was afraid. … I didn’t think anyone would believe me. And … I just wasn’t ready.”
Writing the memoir proved emotionally challenging, but he believes it helped him reclaim something he had lost.
He added, “Writing this book forced me to revisit some of the hardest moments of my life, but it also gave me something I’ve been searching for for a long time: my voice. This isn’t the story people think they know. It’s the story I’ve lived.”
Social Media Posts Reignited Old Allegations

The upcoming memoir is not the first time Collin has publicly discussed his childhood.
In late 2025, he shared a series of messages on social media in which he again addressed his experiences growing up within the famous family.
Reflecting on the reality series that made them famous, he wrote per The Blast, “Late nights like this, I often think about how so many people are still upset that the show they watched for years portrayed a false narrative, while hiding so many dark secrets.”
Collin also made it clear that criticism would not stop him from speaking out on behalf of children he believes have experienced similar situations.
One particularly emotional post focused on his relationship with his mother.
“I remember when my mom would send my siblings off to school every day and then put her hands on me and drive scarring words into my head,” he wrote.
Despite ongoing backlash, Collin remained firm in his position.
“Keep coming for me, I will keep advocating.”
Family Reactions Remain Under The Spotlight

News of the memoir has already sparked fresh interest in one of reality television’s most public family feuds.
Jon Gosselin has publicly supported the project, sharing pre-order links through Instagram Stories shortly after the announcement.
Kate Gosselin, however, has not publicly commented on the book or its claims.
As the release date approaches, attention is likely to return to a family story that has generated headlines for nearly two decades.
Whether the memoir changes public perception or reignites old disputes, Collin Gosselin appears determined to tell a version of events he believes viewers never saw.
