The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale preview is live, and I have already done the part that makes everyone want to close the tab: clicking through page after page of fall clothes, shoes, bags and beauty sets.
This is not a list of everything included in the sale. It is my edited guide to the pieces that make sense for real wardrobes: useful layers, strong fall shoes, a few beauty values and the items I would prioritize before popular colors and sizes disappear.
The reason the Anniversary Sale gets so much attention is that it discounts new-season merchandise before fall rather than clearing out whatever is left from summer. That does not mean every item is automatically a good buy. A discount only matters when the product fills a real gap, works with what you already own and is something you would still want at full price.
My quick take: Start with outerwear, denim, practical shoes and the beauty products you already use. Skip random basics, duplicate trend pieces and anything you cannot immediately style at least three ways.

Early Access is available to Nordstrom cardmembers, with the starting date determined by Nordy Club status. If you do not already want a Nordstrom card, I would not open one solely because a sweater might sell out. Use the preview to make a focused Wish List and be ready when public access begins July 18.
Most major retail sales mark down products after their season is underway. The Anniversary Sale reverses that timeline: selected fall arrivals are temporarily offered at sale prices and then return to regular prices after the event.
That makes the sale most useful for wardrobe categories you were already planning to buy for fall. Think coats, jackets, jeans, trousers, sweaters, boots and sneakers. It can also be a smart time to replace an everyday beauty product when the sale set gives you more product for less than you would normally spend.
It is less useful when the sale creates the shopping list for you. If you did not need another cardigan yesterday, the word “Anniversary” does not make the fifth one practical today.
Every pick in this guide had to meet at least one of these standards:
It fills a common wardrobe gap.
It works with multiple outfits rather than one very specific look.
The sale price is meaningful compared with the after-sale price or stated set value.
It brings useful fall texture or color without making the rest of the closet harder to style.
It is a product or category that tends to be more frustrating to shop after the best sizes and colors disappear.

Do not buy the almost-right boot, coat or bag simply because it is included. The version you truly wanted will still be the version you compare it with all season.
Anything that ignores your real climate and routine
A wool coat can be beautiful and completely unnecessary for someone who lives in a warm climate. Buy for the life you have, not the fall mood board in your head.
Audit your closet first. Write down the actual gaps before opening the sale preview.
Choose a color palette. A limited palette makes separate purchases behave like a wardrobe.
Build your Wish List. Save exact colors and sizes before your access date.
Rank purchases by urgency. Shoes, denim and outerwear in common sizes generally deserve attention before accessories.
Check out by priority. Do not add a random filler item because one first-choice product sold out.
Revisit every order when it arrives. Try each piece with items you already own, not only with other sale purchases.
