A Major Change to Star Wars Lore

Six years ago, The Mandalorian premiered, effectively changing Star Wars forever – especially with its lore. The Mandalorian was famously the first major live-action Star Wars TV show, launching an era of television for the franchise that has since led to other successful and beloved projects, including the critically-acclaimed Andor.

While The Mandalorian takes place in a familiar era, just five years after the events of Return of the Jedi, the show hasn’t been afraid to change the way we look at certain parts of Star Wars forever, especially in greater Mandalorian culture. One such lore change, however, has proven trickier than expected, and could be considered a major mistake.

The Mandalorian Introduced A New Helmet Rule To Mandalorian Canon

One of the first things we learn in The Mandalorian about Din Djarin is that he doesn’t remove his helmet. The fledgling Mythrol, Mando’s bounty in the show’s opening scene, asks the Mandalorian if it’s true that he never removes his helmet. This proves itself to be an important plot point throughout the season.

At the time, however, this strict rule surrounding Mandalorian helmets was brand-new. Most information, if not all, about Mandalorian lore in canon came from the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels series, in which Mandalorians like Bo-Katan Kryze were often seen removing their helmets at their leisure with no issue.

The Mandalorian was thus the first to suggest that some Mandalorians believed they should never remove their helmets. This had a twofold purpose; the first was to establish and maintain some mystery around Din Djarin himself, which made him an even more intriguing character throughout The Mandalorian season 1.

The second had to do with Mando’s silhouette. Star Wars has quite a few iconic silhouettes, from Yoda to Darth Vader and the stormtroopers, and by having Din Djarin wear his helmet most of the time, they were able to make him into one of those iconic silhouettes as well. Series creator Jon Favreau has spoken about this at length.

In the context of the story, the helmet rule exists as a part of the Children of the Watch’s creed, which states that they’re seeking to return to the ways of the ancient Mandalorians, but the mystery and silhouette of the character were the functional reasons behind this decision. Unfortunately, this rule hasn’t really aged well over time.

The Mandalorian Didn’t Know How To Handle Its Helmet Rule

The helmet rule didn’t feel so consequential at the time it was first established in The Mandalorian season 1, but six years later, it’s become a thorny subject. It seemed as if they were headed in a certain direction regarding it during the course of season 2, but an abrupt change was made before season 3 – one that’s irreversible, now.

In season 2, Din Djarin finally meets other Mandalorians who can remove their helmets, which seems to somewhat shake his faith. This culminates when Din willingly removes his helmet twice for Grogu: once to save him, and once to say goodbye to him. Din was clearly ready to consider a life without his helmet by the end of the season.

The Book of Boba Fett, however, didn’t continue this arc for Din Djarin. Instead, he was excommunicated from the Children of the Watch for the trespass of removing his helmet, and thus quested with bathing in the Living Waters on Mandalore to atone. We have yet to see Din Djarin’s face again ever since The Mandalorian season 2 finale.

This was an abrupt change from the Din Djarin who removed his helmet twice for his son. Where it seemed like he may have been willing to divert from the Way, or at least starting to question it, Din Djarin instead doubled down and sought atonement without removing his helmet once. That, unfortunately, isn’t even the worst part.

It’s Not Even Clear How Important The Helmet Rule Really Is Anymore

The importance of the helmet rule has only seemed to dim over time. This is especially true after The Mandalorian season 3, which saw the Mandalorians uniting under Bo-Katan Kryze and the Darksaber. Din Djarin earned his atonement in the Living Waters for removing his helmet, as did Bo-Katan (unintentionally), and this is where things got confusing.

Bo-Katan adhered to the helmet rule while living amongst the Children of the Watch after her own people abandoned her and her home on Kalevala was destroyed by the Imperial Remnant. After leading a rescue mission to save Nevarro from pirates, however, the Armorer told Bo-Katan that she had “walked both worlds,” and could thus safely remove her helmet.

It’s uncertain why exactly the Armorer believed Bo-Katan to be worthy of this and not Din Djarin, who instead had to nearly die for his own atonement, and that has confused many of the existing parameters surrounding the helmet rule. These inconsistencies are unfortunately overshadowing the convoluted helmet rule itself.

Is There Any Way To Fix The Mandalorian Helmet Rule?

Now, six years after The Mandalorian season 1, it’s unclear if the helmet rule that once drew us to Din Djarin’s character can be properly mended. It’s become utterly lost among the other developments in the show, growing much bigger than was likely ever intended for the TV show’s story. Still, however, things don’t have to remain broken forever.

The first way Star Wars can start to rectify the Mandalorian helmet rule is by explaining more about its intricacies. For example, they can answer the age-old question of when exactly Mandalorians can take their helmets off. Grogu is officially Din’s son now, which provides them with an easy way of explaining if family members can see each other’s faces.

Star Wars also has to get more definitive on the Children of the Watch themselves. Since the helmet rule is such a core part of their religion, we need to know more about their history, and why this is such an important part of their ancient Way. This would at least explain why Mando’s adherence to it is so unyielding.

Altogether, having more in-universe context for the helmet rule and its existence could be the saving grace for it as a whole. The Mandalorian still has room to fix this mistake in future stories, whether it be the upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu movie or in other materials, such as novels or comics.
