Darth Vader is one of the most powerful Star Wars characters, but that doesn’t mean he’s the strongest of them all. There are a handful of Force-sensitive individuals who have the capability to defeat him, whether it’s with a lightsaber or the Force.
From the moment he was shown choking the life out of Captain Antilles aboard the Tantive IV at the beginning of A New Hope, Darth Vader exuded strength in the Star Wars movies. As Emperor Palatine’s chief enforcer and supreme commander of the Imperial Fleet, the cybernetic Sith Lord was one of the most dangerous individuals to be reckoned with in a galaxy far, far away for over two decades.
The Prequel Trilogy then explored the full scope of Anakin Skywalker’s Force talents before he became more machine than man. This was further fleshed out in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series, where he was depicted as one of the title conflict’s greatest heroes. It makes one wonder how much more havoc Anakin would have wreaked across the galaxy had he not suffered those injuries on Mustafar.
Yet, even with all his power, there are enough characters in the Star Wars franchise’s main continuity (i.e. excluding Legends stories) who have either been shown beating Vader, or enough details have been revealed about them that they’d be guaranteed to defeat one of the best Star Wars villains. Of that select group, five in particular stand out.
5
Darth Plagueis
First mentioned in Revenge of the Sith, Darth Plagueis is one of the most significant Star Wars characters who’s barely been seen. His only canon appearance so far is when he cameoed from the shadows in The Acolyte season 1 finale. Had the show continued into season 2, it was expected that Plagueis would have played a bigger role in the show, but Disney canceled The Acolyte instead.
Nevertheless, enough information has been revealed about Plagueis in various Star Wars stories that cement him as one of the most powerful Sith Lords. This is best highlighted when Palpatine informed Anakin at the end of the Clone Wars that Plagueis learned how to use the Force to cheat death and create life; abilities that the Jedi didn’t know were possible. Right away, that puts Plagueis leagues above Darth Vader in terms of sheer Force power.
The only reason the former Sith Lord died is that Palpatine, his apprentice, killed him in his sleep. Had he not been overconfident and let his guard down, Plagueis would have remained functionally immortal and been able to easily beat Vader in a fight. Even if it’s assumed that Vader was a superior lightsaber duelist, Plagueis’ Force mastery would easily overwhelm him.
4
Yoda
Yoda and Anakinr never locked lightsaber blades in any of the Star Wars movies and TV shows. That said, as one of the most powerful Jedi from the original Jedi Order, Yoda would have been more than a match for the man whom he once believed shouldn’t have been admitted into the Order in the first place simply because of his age.
For one thing, Yoda had been alive for over 800 years by the time the events The Phantom Menace unfolded. Even taking into account the extended adolescence of his species, as shown with The Mandalorian’s Grogu, that still gave him hundreds more years of training and experience than Anakin and most of the other Jedi. Yoda unquestionably fulfilled the old adage of ‘practice makes perfect.’
Yoda easily defeated Count Dooku, his former apprentice, in Attack of the Clones, with his former apprentice only escaping because he attempted to kill Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi as a distraction. He held his own against Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith, with their duel ending in a stalemate and Yoda being forced to flee. Had he gone to Mustafar in that movie instead of Obi-Wan, Yoda would have surely beaten Anakin and ensured that the fallen Jedi was dead.
3
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Although Obi-Wan was another powerful Jedi from the final years of the Old Republic, it’s safe to say that Anakin had him beat in terms of natural Force talent. So instead, Obi-Wan was able to beat his apprentice-turned-enemy on multiple occasions by relying on his intellect and knowledge of Anakin’s fighting style from their many years together.
So while Anakin was more prone to overconfidence and letting his emotions guide his decisions, Obi-Wan instead kept a level head and prioritized strategy in his dueling. Gaining the high ground on Mustafar to achieve his victory in their first battle is a great example of this, as was the pre-Attack of the Clones training duel from the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series.
Though Vader overpowered Obi-Wan in their first duel during the TV series, it could be argued the latter character was at a disadvantage because of the shock he felt learning the former was still alive. He won their later rematch on that show, and if Obi-Wan hadn’t sacrificed himself in A New Hope so that Luke Skywalker and allies could escape the first Death Star, there’s a good chance he would have vanquished Vader again.
2
Darth Sidious
Before Yoda and Palpatine dueled in Revenge of the Sith, the man also known as Darth Sidious told his adversary that, “Darth Vader will become more powerful than either of us.” If Anakin hadn’t had three of his four limbs sliced off and been badly burned on Mustafar, perhaps that prediction would have come true. Instead, Sidious remained mightier than his apprentice.
The few times Sidious is shown fighting in Star Wars media, he’s an absolute monster. That includes when he beat Maul and Savage Oppress in Star Wars: The Clone Wars without breaking a sweat, as well as quickly killing Saesee Tiin, Agen Kolar and Kit Fisto in Revenge of the Sith before dueling a solo Mace Windu. More important, there have been instances in other Star Wars media where Sidious unleashed pain on the armored Darth Vader to put him in his place.
Vader was particularly at a disadvantage against Sidious’ Force lightning because of his robotic body. He was only able to toss his master down that reactor shaft in the second Death Star because Sidious never expected his apprentice to betray him, and that betrayal cost Vader his life. Had Sidious not been taken by surprise, Vader would have been eliminated instead.
1
Luke Skywalker
Luke Skywalker got an even later start to becoming a Jedi than his father did, and he did make some mistakes during the course of his training. However, he became more powerful at a faster pace than Anakin did. So by the time Star Wars’ Original Trilogy was over, Luke defeated Darth Vader and earned his official Jedi status in the process.
This happened through a combination of Obi-Wan and Yoda’s instruction, the events Luke went through between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and briefly succumbing to his anger while aboard the second Death Star. Luke’s power only increased from there, as seen when he cut through the Dark Troopers in The Mandalorian season 2 finale, all the way to when he Force projected himself onto Crait from planets away shortly before dying at the end of The Last Jedi.
So the older Luke who attempted to restart the Jedi Order and trained Rey before he died would have overpowered Vader more effortlessly than he did as a young man. However, as Luke demonstrated when he distracted Kylo Ren, conflicts don’t always need to be won with sheer strength in Star Wars. Sometimes more creative solutions are called for, meaning a battle between an older Luke and Darth Vader might have unfolded differently than in a standard lightsaber duel.
