More than four decades after The Last Starfighter became one of the defining cult science fiction films of the 1980s, the beloved franchise is expanding once again. Following the launch of Mad Cave Studios’ new ongoing comic series in July 2026, fans are now getting an entirely new story centered on one of the movie’s most overlooked heroes.
Rather than revisiting Alex Rogan’s journey, the latest installment explores the fate of Beta, the simuloid duplicate whose sacrifice made the original film’s climactic victory possible, according to a press release. The new one-shot, The Last Starfighter: Beta #1, promises to answer a question fans have been asking since the film debuted in 1984: what really happened after Beta was presumed destroyed?
Beta Finally Steps Into The Spotlight
For years, Beta’s role in The Last Starfighter has remained one of the franchise’s biggest mysteries. Created as an android duplicate of Alex Rogan, Beta stayed behind on Earth to fool the Ko-Dan Armada’s assassin into believing the young hero had been eliminated. That selfless act bought Alex enough time to destroy the enemy flagship and save Rylos.
The new comic from The Last Starfighter changes everything audiences thought they knew. According to Mad Cave Studios, Beta actually survived the attack. Left behind while Alex continued his adventures in space, the artificial being must navigate life on Earth without orders, allies, or even a clear purpose. The story also introduces a fresh alien threat in the form of the Zando-Zan, ensuring Beta’s journey is far from peaceful.
The project reunites original The Last Starfighter screenwriter Jonathan Betuel with producer Paul Davidson, while television veterans Benjamin Raab and Deric A. Hughes handle writing duties. The creative team also includes artist David Cutler, colorist Francesco Segala, letterer Rob Jones, and covers by David Lopez and Jessica Fong, combining franchise veterans with experienced comic talent.
A New Chapter Honors The Film’s Legacy
Rather than serving as a simple nostalgia project, The Last Starfighter: Beta aims to expand the emotional themes that helped make the original movie memorable. Raab describes the story as a “stranger in a strange land” adventure, focusing on an artificial intelligence attempting to understand humanity after losing the person it was created to imitate. The result blends science fiction action with a more personal exploration of identity and belonging.
Hughes noted that Beta stood apart from many movie androids because audiences trusted and cared about him instead of fearing him. While viewers believed Beta died heroically in 1984, the new comic from The Last Starfighter universe gives the character an unexpected second chance. Artist David Cutler echoed that excitement, explaining that Beta had always been one of his favorite parts of the film and that exploring the character’s search for individuality made the project especially meaningful.
