When Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell are set to star in a movie, the world understandably pays attention. This weekend, the likes of The Conjuring: Last Rites, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues are to be joined by the exciting romantic fantasy movie A Big Bold Beautiful Journey starring Farrell and Robbie. However, early reviews are in, and it seems this Big Bold Beautiful Journey is actually quite bad. With that in mind, your plans might’ve changed, and a movie-sized gap has appeared in your schedule. ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ (2018)
Rotten Tomatoes: 96% | IMDb: 7.0/10
The Summer I Turned Pretty’s final season has come to an end (well, until the movie, that is), and you’re wondering what to watch next. Well, as a fan of the novel trilogy by acclaimed writer Jenny Han, the obvious choice is To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Another of Han’s most popular novels, released in 2014, this teen rom-com tells the tale of Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor), whose life at school is turned upside down when secret letters she has written to her crushes are delivered and her desires revealed.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before ticks all the boxes of a teen rom-com. From an endearing central romance that urges its audience to scream for their first kiss to the breakout role of future Hollywood star Noah Centineo, the movie is the perfect cozy afternoon watch to help fill your upcoming Sunday. For a short while, it’ll feel like The Summer I Turned Pretty never ended.
2
‘8 Mile’ (2002)
Rotten Tomatoes: 76% | IMDb: 7.2/10
An exciting selection of new arrivals made their way to Netflix as September began, with this semi-autobiographical, Oscar-winning gem one of the best. Based on his life as an up-and-coming artist in Detroit, rapper Eminem’s critically acclaimed drama 8 Mile follows Jimmy (Eminem) as he fights financial and personal struggles to try to make a name for himself in the underground music scene.
Directed by the late, great Curtis Hanson, 8 Mile is a classic tale of an artist battling to showcase his talent to the world, with the immersive twist of being grounded in the reality of Eminem himself. The famous rapper delights in the lead role, mirroring the surprise talent of Jimmy in the movie with his unlikely acting prowess. However, he isn’t the only star, with 8 Mile also boasting the likes of Kim Basinger, Michael Shannon, the late Brittany Murphy, and the feature debut of MCU alum, Anthony Mackie.
3
‘Limitless’ (2011)
Rotten Tomatoes: 68%. | IMDb: 7.4/10
Bradley Cooper is unquestionably one of the most talented men in Hollywood. This weekend, why not sit down and indulge in one of the most underrated entries into his busy filmography? Somewhat based on Alan Glynn’s 2001 novel The Dark Fields, Limitless stars Cooper as struggling writer Eddie Morra, who takes a pill known as NZT that gives him unfiltered access to his brain’s intellectual power. However, what begins as the chance to fulfill his dreams soon turns to chaos.
A clever premise is fulfilled in Limitless, as Cooper manages to harness the difficult challenge of portraying someone with endless knowledge. Visually stylish and narratively engaging, Limitless won’t be the best movie you’ve ever seen, but it will keep you enthralled for almost two hours and help keep you entertained this weekend. What more could you want?
