Every August, Nordstrom makes me forget that it is still ninety degrees outside. I will be wearing sandals, minding my business, and suddenly I am mentally styling chocolate-brown sweaters, plaid trousers and the perfect pair of jeans for a crisp October morning that does not exist yet. The Anniversary Sale has that effect: fall clothes arrive early, the prices look tempting and it becomes very easy to build an imaginary new life inside your cart.
But the pieces that actually earn their keep are rarely the loudest ones. They are the under-$60 finds that fix the little gaps in a real wardrobe the top that makes old jeans feel current, the comfortable pants that still look polished on a coffee run, or the sweater you can wear to work and again on Sunday. I went through the sale with that exact filter, because a bargain is only good when you can picture yourself reaching for it after the excitement of the sale is over.
