Video game film adaptations have apparently never been more back, as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie raked in $130 million over the weekend, and $190 million in the five days since it opened on Wednesday. Those numbers do trail the numbers of the first film, which made $146 million in its opening weekend and $204 million in its first five days, but it was a good enough opening to take the title of biggest opening of the year from Project Hail Mary. Internationally, Mario Galaxy picked up an additional $182.4 million, bringing its worldwide five day total to $372.5 million against a $110 million production budget.
Second place at the box office went to Project Hail Mary, which brought in $30 million, falling 43% in its third weekend. So far, it has made $217 million domestically and $420.7 million worldwide.
In the third spot was A24 newcomer The Drama, led by Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, which brought in $14.4 million. It didn’t quite match the opening of Zendaya’s Challengers, but it exceeded the take of A24’s Materialists, which had a similar demographic appeal. The film also made $13.6 million overseas, for a global take of $28 million, which matches its budget.
Hoppers took the fourth spot with $5.8 million in its fourth weekend of release. It has made $149.6 million in North America and $332 million worldwide.
In fifth place was the Colleen Hoover adaptation Reminders of Him, which brought in $2.3 million. So far, it has made $45 million domestic and $79 million globally.
All of these numbers combined added up for the best moviegoing weekend of 2026 so far, with overall ticket sales up from 2025.
