By tying up a loose end from 26 years ago, HBO Max’s Baldur’s Gate TV show can give fans the first live-action Drow. The Drow occupy a significant part of the lore of the Forgotten Realms, and yet, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves skirted around them. It featured an adventure into their home – the Underdark – but curiously avoided the dark elves of its universe.

Chances are, we will be seeing at least one live-action Drow in the near future. The Forgotten Realms are set to get two TV shows, one from Netflix and another – a Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel series – from HBO Max. With both having more time to explore that world, there’s much better odds of a Drow showing up in one of those two shows than Honor Among Thieves.

In the case of the Baldur’s Gate series specifically, it could easily introduce an original Drow character for the main party of adventurers to encounter. But a much more intriguing option could come in the form of a familiar face from Baldur’s Gate 2.

HBO Max’s Baldur’s Gate Show Can Finally Reveal What Happened To Soulafein

In Baldur’s Gate 2, the main protagonist’s party has to enter the Drow city of Ust Natha while in the Underdark. While there, they meet a male Drow warrior named Soulafein, who becomes the party’s reluctant guide. At first, he comes across as a typical, cold-blooded Drow warrior, but – depending on the player’s choices – he’s revealed to be a much more nuanced character.

As it turns out, Solaufein is actually a good person who rejects the evil ways of its society and their goddess, Lloth. Instead, Soulafein hides his true nature and worships the much more benevolent goddess, Eilistraee. If certain decisions are made, Solaufein leaves Ust Natha for an adventure on the surface, and is never seen again.

Solaufein was easily one of the most interesting characters in the Baldur’s Gate franchise to not be a possible companion for the central protagonist. Fans were so disappointed in that missed opportunity and inspired by the potential he had that mods were made to continue his arc. Unfortunately, though, his story was never finished in any official capacity.

HBO Max’s Baldur’s Gate show could finally revive that plotline and explain what became of Solaufein. That would make sense to do, in spite of the fact that the third game takes place more than a century after Baldur’s Gate 2. After all, Drow can live for hundreds of years. It’s not implausible that Soulafein is out there somehow, living a better life than the one he had in Ust Natha.

Even if it’s only for an episode or two, the show could take some time to catch up with him, and thus offer a great and much-appreciated connection to the original Baldur’s Gate games in the process.
