The Sopranos star Michael Imperioli, who played Christopher Moltisanti throughout the show’s run, discussed how the show might have looked in the present political climate in a new interview. He claimed that “a lot of” the characters may have been supporters of Donald Trump if the show were made today.
Michael Imperioli thinks ‘a lot of’ The Sopranos characters might be supporters of Donald Trump
Michael Imperioli, who starred as Christopher Moltisanti throughout the show’s 86-episode run, believes that many of the characters would have been supporters of President Donald Trump if the show were set in the present day.
“The show is about the American dream, especially through the eyes of immigrants,” Imperioli explained during a new interview with The Independent.
“I think that would be one of the big themes if it was made today: the current climate in the US and what they’re doing to immigrants,” he continued. “The fact is that these characters are all immigrants, but I think a lot of them would probably be Trump supporters, oddly enough. So how do they reconcile those things? When Italians came over – and people forget this, or they don’t want to see it – a lot of them were undocumented.”
However, contrary to Imperioli’s take, series creator David Chase said in 2019 that Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano would not have been charmed by Donald Trump. “He would think the guy was full of [expletive],” he told The New York Times. “Whether he thought he was a good president or not — I don’t know that Tony thought much about that question at all, with anybody who was in office. But I know Tony would have thought Trump was penny-ante, in terms of his lying and presentation.”
The Sopranos remains one of the best-regarded television shows of all time.
