Netflix‘s latest episode from its documentary series, Trainwreck: The Real Project X, covered the infamous Project X Haren, where a Facebook invite page by Merthe Weusthuis ended up causing a huge riot in the otherwise quiet town of Haren.
The night ended with riots, looting, injuries, and arrests after a Facebook page for a birthday invite went viral and attracted almost 5,000 people.
Did anyone die in or after Netflix’s Trainwreck: The Real Project X documentary?
No, no one died in the riot that took place in Haren. Initially, reports surfaced that two girls were crushed at the event and died. But the Netflix documentary clarified that this was not true. However, the riot caused significant damage at the gathering spot.
The riot injured at least 36 people, including Mariska Sloot, a councillor for Haren, who suffered an attack with a glass bottle. The documentary and reports from the incident confirm that no one intended the party to become violent in any manner.
After the invitation went viral, thousands of people gathered, mostly young people, hoping to have a party. But things escalated quickly as the crowd grew larger and larger. When riot police tried to subdue the crowd, people retaliated, making things worse and causing injuries.
As things escalated further, the rioters threw Molotov cocktails and set cars on fire.
After the incident, the police conducted an enquiry and arrested over 100 people. Ultimately, 17 people were charged for the violence that occurred at the scene.
The girl who unknowingly caused this, Merthe Weusthuis, has since moved away from the Netherlands. She now lives in Dubai.
“I think a lot of people came because they wanted a party. I think it’s sort of a normal, inherent thing in teenagers around that age that they want to rebel and take their freedom, express their personalities,” Merthe said about the event in the documentary. It has remained one of the most infamous incidents in the history of Haren.
Trainwreck: The Real Project X is now streaming on Netflix.
