Today, I’m putting the legendary The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner to the test. While often celebrated for its efficacy, this potent formula requires a bit of know-how to use safely. Join me as we dive into its ingredient profile, the core benefits, and the best practices for integrating it into your routine without irritation.
The Ordinary’s Glycolic Acid Toner is probably one of the most popular products by the brand (second only to AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution, in my opinion). This handy bottle has earned its reputation as a cult-favorite by balancing a potent resurfacing solution with accessible pricing.
The product promises to address a wide spectrum of skin concerns, including the removal of dead skin cells, promoting brightness, and reducing the visibility of fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging.

Packaging:
The Ordinary is famous for its simplistic – I would even say straightforward – packaging design that has a pharmaceutical look rather than that of over-the-counter skincare. It is clean, light, and very clear. The toner is packed in a large, transparent bottle made from high-quality, recyclable plastic. The clear bottle allows you to easily monitor how much product is left, but believe me, it will last a very long time!
It features a white screw-on cap, but it is famously packaged with an additional twist-top nozzle applicator. This nozzle allows for precise dispensing onto cotton pads or directly onto the skin without spilling.
Texture and Scent:
Now for the texture and scent! The toner has a very light peachy tint to it; it looks and feels like soapy water on the skin, and if you shake the bottle vigorously, it will even create foamy bubbles. Once applied, it slides smoothly across the surface, spreads easily, and absorbs quite fast, leaving the skin feeling instantly soft and supple.
The scent is non-existent, or at least nearly so. I can’t smell it on my skin, so those of you with sensitive noses can feel safe using it.

Ingredients:
Of course, the most important part, aka the heart of every skincare product, is the composition, which is fantastic here. The Ordinary’s Glycolic Toner balances potent exfoliant with soothing botanical extracts. Here is a little breakdown of how these specific components work in the formula:

How to Use The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toner
First of all, do a patch test! This is an extra important step, especially for exfoliating acids. To achieve the best results without compromising your skin barrier, the Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner should be integrated into your evening routine no more than once daily. After cleansing, apply the solution directly onto your face and neck, avoiding the delicate eye area and any broken skin. Because this is a potent chemical exfoliant, it should not be rinsed off; instead, let it absorb fully before layering on your favorite hydrating serums or creams.
If you are new to direct acids, start by using them just two or three times a week to build tolerance. Start with a small quantity, slowly adding more and more each time. Most importantly, because glycolic acid increases your skin’s sensitivity to the sun, applying a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning is a non-negotiable step to protect your newly resurfaced skin from UV damage.
My Experience:
Let me start by explaining my skin type and current condition. I have dry combination skin that has been feeling quite irritated and inflamed recently, so introducing new skincare is a bit problematic for me at the moment. While I’m not new to exfoliating toners, I have always used a 5% concentration, so the 7% felt a bit too ‘spicy’ on my skin at first.
The second application was more successful, as I applied a smaller amount and followed with a layer of face cream. This time, my skin didn’t sting, and when I washed my face the next morning, I could feel the dead skin cells sloughing off under my fingers. The face and neck felt very smooth in the morning, although some redness was present too.
*Extra tip: If you are just starting out, try applying the toner to your skin without washing it first. A layer of natural sebum acts as a slight buffer, reducing the potency of the acid and preventing it from penetrating too deeply. Once your skin builds up a tolerance, you can transition to applying it on freshly cleansed skin for maximum efficacy.

Final Verdict…
Exfoliation: 👍👍👍👎(7/10)
Texture: 👍👍👍👎(8/10)
Overall: 👍👍👍👎 (7/10)
