When life’s roadblocks tell you that you’ll never be the best version of yourself, it’s only natural to want to fight back and prove everybody wrong. 1997’s Gattaca toys with that notion, using eugenics as its vehicle while laughing in the face of fate’s predetermined outcomes. Far from a box office success, Gattaca risks being lost to time despite its 82 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. Its message, however, remains timeless and more relevant than ever.
An obsessive study of identity and ambition, Gattaca is one of those movies that not only makes you believe in yourself, but shows that becoming your best self isn’t a birthright. It’s something you have to fight for.
In-Valids Vs Valids
Set in a not-so-distant dystopian future where genetics determine social class, Gattaca centers on Vincent Freeman (Ethan Hawke), an in-valid expected to live only to age 30 due to his genetic inferiority. Every opportunity in life is stripped away from him, while his younger brother Anton (Loren Dean) is set up for success by their parents, Antonio and Marie (Jayne Brook). Dreaming of space travel, Vincent begins training young, pushing his body and mind to the limit to prove he’s capable of more than his DNA suggests.
Knowing he was dealt a bad hand in life, Vincent stacks the deck by assuming the identity of Jerome Morrow (Jude Law), a genetically superior athlete paralyzed after a car accident. Jerome, who’s kept his accident a secret, agrees to let Vincent use his identity in exchange for room and board. With Jerome supplying blood, urine, and hair samples, Vincent lands a job at the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation, but pretending to be someone else isn’t as simple as showing up.
Gattaca performs daily DNA screenings, forcing Vincent to develop a meticulous routine to conceal his identity. He exfoliates constantly, hides blood under synthetic fingerprints, and swaps urine samples regularly. Every day is a gamble. If he’s exposed as an in-valid, everything he’s built will collapse, and even he doesn’t know the full consequences.
A Murder Mystery Can Ruin Everything
Things grow more complicated when Gattaca’s administrator is found murdered, and an unregistered in-valid’s eyelash is discovered at the crime scene. Meanwhile, Vincent, who’s weeks away from achieving his lifelong dream of traveling to Saturn, starts a romance with Irene Cassini (Uma Thurman), a high-risk valid who’s also been told she’ll never amount to much. Their relationship runs on deception, as Irene suspects Vincent isn’t who he claims but can’t resist seeing how far he’ll go.
Anton, now a detective investigating the murder, suspects an in-valid is responsible for the murder but doesn’t realize it could be his brother. With the Saturn mission approaching, Vincent must choose between his old life and his new one; the identity he was born into and the one he’s built. Desperate to prove that “in-valid” is just a label, Vincent’s mission becomes bigger than himself.
An Excellent Examination Of Eugenics
Gattaca’s core idea is simple: individuals, not society, define their outcomes. Vincent was told he was weak, so he made himself strong. Told he wouldn’t live past 30, he focused on his health. Told he’d never work for Gattaca, he did it anyway through skill and perseverance. The irony is that if his secret is ever uncovered, his achievements will be dismissed as fraud, no matter how hard he worked.
That tension between what we are told we can be and what we prove ourselves to be makes Gattaca endlessly relevant. The film critiques a world obsessed with perfection while championing the human spirit that refuses to conform. Strangely, Gattaca’s limited availability on streaming platforms mirrors its own theme of exclusion. It’s as if this critically acclaimed modern classic must also prove its worth to audiences through on-demand rentals instead of having a rightful place in the spotlight.
A smart, haunting reflection on eugenics and self-determination, Gattaca remains essential viewing for anyone who’s ever doubted their potential.
