Superman director James Gunn has explained the reason behind the early digital release of the David Corenswet-led DC Universe movie. At the moment, the movie has already earned a worldwide gross of over $585 million at the box office. It also currently holds a Certified Fresh rating of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Superman was written and directed by Gunn, based on the DC characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The movie stars Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Anthony Carrigan as Metarmorpho, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Edi Gathegi, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, and Neva Howell as Martha Kent, along with Alan Tudyk, Michael Rooker, and Grace Chan.

What did James Gunn say about Superman’s early digital release date?

Recently, Warner Bros. announced that Superman will be available to rent or own on digital platforms starting tomorrow, August 15, after a month since its theatrical debut. This is surprising for fans, especially when the movie is still performing well at the box office.

During a recent interview with ScreenRant, Gunn addressed Superman’s early digital release, revealing that this decision was due to the impending premiere of Peacemaker Season 2. He admitted that he initially thought that they would still have one more month before the John Cena-led show returns. However, the final decision for the movie’s release strategy was ultimately out of his control.

“Well, it’s very complicated, but the truth is it is because of Peacemaker. I originally thought Peacemaker was going to be coming out next month,” Gunn shared. “There was a lot of things that are beyond our control, so that Peacemaker is coming out now, and, at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see Superman that wanted to, even those people who couldn’t get to a theater before Peacemaker. And that’s really the reason for it.”
