Sinners won the award for cast in a motion picture at the 32nd Actor Awards, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The show was held on Sunday (March 1) at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles. The film’s star, Michael B. Jordan, won male actor in a leading role, an award that was expected to go to Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme. Jessie Buckley took female actor in a leading role for Hamnet. Amy Madigan and Sean Penn took the awards for supporting performances in film for Weapons and One Battle After Another, respectively.
This year’s show was held during final-round voting for the Oscars (Feb. 26 to March 5). How good of a predictor are the Actor Awards when it comes to the Oscars? Good, but hardly definitive. In the last 10 years, five winners of the Actor Award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture have gone on to win the Oscar for best picture: Spotlight, Parasite, CODA, Everything Everywhere All at Once and Oppenheimer. But five did not go on to win the Oscar: Hidden Figures, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Black Panther, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Conclave.
Last year, the two supporting actor winners at the Actor Awards (Kieran Culkin for A Real Pain and Zoe Saldaña for Emilia Pérez) went on to win Oscars, but the two leading actor winners (Timothée Chalamet for A Complete Unknown andDemi Moore for The Substance)did not.
The winners of the ensemble cast awards in TV were The Pitt in drama and The Studio in comedy.
Frankenstein and Marty Supreme were shut out, despite three nominations each. On the TV side, The White Lotus had the worst showing. It went 0-4 on the night.
This was the first ceremony in which the awards are named the Actor Awards. The name change was announced on Nov. 14. For the third year in a row, the ceremony streamed live on Netflix. Actress Kristen Bell hosted for the third time. She sang a special-material number, “Stage Name,” to open the show.
Catherine O’Hara, who died on Jan. 30 at age 71, won female actor in a comedy series for her role in The Studio. All but two of the living winners were present to accept their awards. Missing were Penn, who won male actor in a supporting role for One Battle After Another, and 16-year-old Owen Cooper, who won male actor in a television movie or limited series for Adolescence.
A cover version of the Daryl Hall song “Everytime You Go Away” soundtracked the In Memoriam segment, which included such legends as Gene Hackman, Diane Keaton, Robert Redford and Rob Reiner, and a few music personalities who also acted, namely Bobby Sherman, Connie Francis and David Johanson.
Coming out of the In Memoriam segment, Miles Caton, the 20-year-old breakout star from Sinners, performed “This Little Light of Mine,” the traditional song that opens that soundtrack. He was joined by his cousin, Anaysha Figueroa-Cooper, and the DC6 Singers.
Harrison Ford received the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award. Woody Harrelson was the presenter.
Silent House Productions returned to produce the show. Jon Brockett served as showrunner and executive producer alongside Silent House Productions’ Baz Halpin, Mark Bracco and Linda Gierahn who also served as executive producers.
