Selena Gomez has officially re-entered the spotlight with “In The Dark,” a pulsating, 1980s-infused lush, synth-driven dance-pop single, featured on the soundtrack of the Netflix’s hit rom-com Nobody Wants This Season 2.

The track, released on October 23, marks Gomez’s first new release since her collaborative album with now-husband Benny Blanco, I Said I Love You First, and arrives alongside a striking music video that nods to her 2015 Revival era while embracing contemporary pop sensibilities.

Produced by the elite trio of Andrew Watt, Cirkut, and Louis Bell and co-written with Ali Tamposi and Justin Tranter, “In The Dark” is a glittering synth-driven anthem that fuses throbbing bass lines with Gomez’s emotive vocals.

The chorus, “And I’ll be there when you lose yourself / To remind you of who you are / And I’ll be there like nobody else / You’re still beautiful in the dark,” captures the song’s central theme of unwavering support and intimacy, aligning seamlessly with the romantic narrative of the Netflix series.

The accompanying music video, directed by Luke Orlando, amplifies the retro aesthetic with minimal yet potent visuals. Selena Gomez alternates between a black leotard on a white chaise and a two-piece leather ensemble set against smoke-filled, moody backdrops. In an Instagram post, she described the video as “a little nostalgia droplet,” highlighting the deliberate homage to her Revival era while letting the song’s emotional core drive the visual narrative.

Nobody Wants This Season 2’s soundtrack, released simultaneously with Gomez’s single, spans 19 tracks from an eclectic roster including Chris Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, FINNEAS, Teddy Swims, and emerging talents like Royel Otis and Cassandra Coleman. Music supervision, led by Aperture Music’s Manish Raval, Tom Wolfe, and Jonathan Leahy, continues the series’ tradition of blending genre-spanning sounds to complement its unconventional rom-com storytelling.

The series follows the unlikely romance between Kristen Bell’s podcaster Joanne and Adam Brody’s rabbi Noah, and the soundtrack mirrors that narrative complexity, offering alt-pop, country, R&B, and genre-defying tracks that create an immersive auditory landscape. Selena Gomez’s contribution stands out not only for its production and vocals but also for the careful balance of nostalgia and modernity, echoing the show’s charm and the broader trend of retro-infused pop music.

With “In The Dark,” Selena Gomez reaffirms her place as one of pop’s most versatile storytellers. She’s an artist who understands how to translate emotion into atmosphere and nostalgia into something unmistakably current. The track isn’t just another generic soundtrack entry but a reminder of Gomez’s ability to blur the lines between music and cinema, crafting moments that feel as visual as they sound.

Confident, sleek, and quietly self-assured, it marks yet another chapter in her evolution as a pop figure who knows exactly when to turn up the lights — and when to leave us captivated in the dark.
