Grayscale have released the deluxe edition of their recent album, The Hart, out today via Infield. The expanded version features reimagined tracks, featuring Mayday Parade’s Derek Sanders, Underoath’s Aaron Gillespie, the Wonder Years’ Dan Campbell, and more.
Featured on the LP is a duet with Cassadee Pope, who joins Grayscale on “Painting Over You.” “I was drawn to this song because of its ability to illustrate that bittersweet feeling of moving on that is so hard to explain,” Pope says exclusively to AP. “The visuals in the lyrics made it easy for me to tap into that feeling. My goal was to show that the other person in this relationship is struggling, too, by adding some emotional ad-libs and taking melodic liberties that add a little more pain to the story.”

“I remember shortly after writing this song, we felt it would work even better as a duet,” Grayscale vocalist Collin Walsh says to AP. “We immediately felt Cassadee’s singing style was perfect for ‘Painting Over You’ — we changed a handful of lyrics to make the story speak from the perspective of two people grieving the same loss on opposite sides.”
The video, which features both Pope and Walsh, sees them both pacing around different rooms in the same apartment, their movements mirroring the tension and distance between two people trying to process heartbreak under one roof.
“Our goal was to make a one-take video that captured the emotions of a relationship breaking,” Walsh continues. “We shot it on a super rainy day in NYC. While the weather wasn’t in our control, obviously, it played a perfect part in the lonely, somber apartment feeling like the place where a relationship was laid to rest.”
Grayscale will play their annual hometown shows later this week in Philadelphia, performing at Johnny Brenda’s and the Theatre of Living Arts. Check out the video for “Painting Over You” below.
