Secret Of The Ooze Was Less Violent Explained

More than three decades after the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, the film’s cast have shed light on why the sequel was so toned down compared to the darker, more brutal themes of the original film.

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, the titular heroes face off once more against their nemesis, Shredder (Francois Chau). Seeking revenge, Shredder acquires the same radioactive ooze that transformed the turtles and uses it to create two powerful new mutants: Tokka, a massive snapping turtle, and Rahzar, a creature that resembles a wolf. With Shredder planning to use the leftover substance on himself, the TMNT do everything in their power to stop his sinister plans.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, the cast of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze revealed the reasoning behind the big change. Kenn Scott, who portrayed Raphael in both films, said that the decision to decrease the amount of violence came from both external pressure and the marketing team.

The actor explained that following the first movie, some parents expressed concern over the intensity of the film’s fight scenes. The producers, keen to reach a wider audience and maximize box office potential, decided to adopt a less violent approach for the sequel. This would also allow them to keep one of their biggest target demographics, children, by appeasing their parents and guardians.

The changes were the most noticeable during the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ combat scenes. Unlike the first film, the four heroes largely refrained from using their signature weapons. Michelangelo (Robbie Rist) relied on family-friendly alternatives, like combat cold cuts, while Leonardo (Mark Caso) and Raphael barely used their swords, except for a few minor or comedic moments, such as throwing a sword into a ceiling or using it to stab a flying pizza. Donatello (Leif Tilden) was the only turtle who wielded his bow briefly, primarily during a laboratory scene, and even then, it was deemed acceptable because it wasn’t considered an “edged weapon.”

The gesture to soften the action helped make the sequel more family-friendly and ensured that it could reach a broader audience without upsetting parents who had been unhappy about the original film’s intensity. While some older fans missed the grittier tone, the shift ultimately allowed the franchise to maintain its charm and humor while keeping the fights suitable for younger viewers.

In terms of what was the perceived violence in the first movie, there was some pushback from some parent groups to the producers. And certainly the producers wanted to get as much outreach and sell as many tickets as they could on the second movie. So they decided to try to tone down, I guess, what they thought was the aggressive side of the violent actions or something. There were two directives in the movie. One of the directives was that no turtle could use their weapons during any fights. That’s why Michelangelo uses the combat cold cuts. Leonardo doesn’t really use his swords except to throw them in the ceiling once. Raphael only draws his size to stab a piece of pizza that he catches in the air. And I think it’s only Donatello that, for a brief few moments, uses his bow during the laboratory scene when they’re trying to get the use from Tatsu and the foot soldiers.

I can’t remember specifically, but I do remember Dolly’s the only one who wields the bow. And again, it’s because it was not an edged weapon, so I guess they could allow him to get away with it or something.

However, while the violence was mainly cut, the entire cast and the stunt performers all had a great time filming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. During their discussion with ScreenRant, they revealed some of their favorite moments both behind and in front of the camera, as well as their relationships with one another.

Kenn Scott: I like the moments when Raf gets separated from the other guys. In both movies, Raf essentially makes a decision to do something on his own, and he goes off, and he gets in some crap. Then all his brothers have to team up and go make it right. In the second movie, the same thing happens. Raf wanders off, and he gets caught, and he gets tied up, and he’s held in the junkyard when all the other turtles come to help him.

I remember that scene; I won’t say it’s necessarily fondly, but I remember that scene because I was isolated as Raphael. In the moment when the three other turtles, and in this moment they were portrayed by the three stunt turtle performers. They got scooped up in the cargo net. When they got scooped up in the cargo net, little did anybody realize that overnight, the cable holding the net had been rubbing up against another cable, and it had some problems, and it actually broke. And so the poor guys that were wearing the stunt suits for Mikey, Leo, and Donnie all fell like 8-10 feet down to the ground. And then that was a whole thing. A couple of guys got mildly hurt. One guy really got his foot broken and all that stuff. I really remember that as a moment where it’s like, it was a real close call for not being in there.

And then I also really love that scene because it’s when they go, “Hey, there’s Raf.” And somebody goes, “Yeah, a little too Raf.”

Michelan Sisti: I have met and had wonderful conversations with Robbie Rist, who voiced Michelangelo. But that’s usually been at a convention. I’ve met him once when we were opening the second movie. There was one time where they were at one of the functions, either it was the red carpet opening that we did or the party afterwards. So that was the first time I got to meet him in person. And then I met him a few times after that. But other than that, no. I wish I did. He’s a musician too. And mutual friends of mine had tried to arrange one time for me to go and hear him play with his band, but my schedule changed and I couldn’t go. So maybe down the road I can do that. But yeah, he’s a really nice guy. I like Robbie.

Leif Tilden: So this is a tale. So the premiere of the first movie, after that premiere, I went up to him, and I was like, “Hey, hey man, my name is Leif. I was actually in the suit of Donatello, and you did the voice for it,” and he just kind of looked at me and he said, “Okay.” And then walked away. And then years later, I’m a location scout for a TV show called Without a Trace, and I’m up in the Hollywood Hills, and we’re looking for like a house to do a scene up there. I knocked on this door and Corey Feldman opens the door, and I’m like, “Oh my God.” And I said, “Hey, I’m in the show without a trace. I’m in the locations department. I’m scouting. I’m looking for a house to do the scene and you have this great view.” And I just thought, maybe he’d be interested if I could take some pictures. And he’s like, “Does it pay?” And I’m like, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, of course. We do a location fee.”

I took pictures, we’re in the backyard, and just before I was about to leave through the front door, I’m thinking, “Should I say something?” I left to the door, and I go, “Thanks, man. Thank you so much. Here’s my card. I got your info. We’ll be in touch. We’re going to show this stuff to the director and the producers. And I just wanted to add, my name is Leif. I was in the suit of Donatello.” And before I could finish, he slammed the door in my face.

Jumpstart 10 years later with my wife, we’re at this jazz club, and he’s in the corner. I decided I’d say something, “Honey, I’m just going to go in the back.” And there’s this little place behind the jazz club in the alley where you can smoke. I went back there, lit up a cigarette, and he comes out to the back and it was just me and him. I’m thinking to myself, I’m actually starting to sweat because I’m like, “Do I say something?” “Hey man, nice set, huh? It’s cool, right?” I like this.” And I said, “Hey, I just got to say, my name is Leif and I did the suit of Donatello-” And he looked at me, the color drained out of his face, and just headed back into the club. To this day, I’m convinced that Corey Feldman thinks I’m like this weird stalker that’s claiming to be this Ninja Turtle that he did the voice of. It’s hilarious.

Seeing how 35 years have gone by since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze was released in 1991, a lot of the cast had not watched the film in quite some time. Their answers ranged from 1 to 15 years ago, potentially more, as they understandably couldn’t remember the exact year since it was over a decade ago.

Michelan Sisti: It’s been so many years. I watched it last year in preparation for the interviews that we were doing for the first movie, so I watched them both.

Kenn Scott: I couldn’t tell you how many years it’s been. I’ve seen number one. I went to the theaters and saw it last year, but number two, it’s been quite a while since I’ve seen that movie. So I’m looking forward to it. And we’ve got a whole event planned here in Texas with a full theater and costume turtles and fans and everything. It’s going to be great. I’m looking forward to it.

Leif Tilden: I have some friends who have some kids, and I think it was like five or six years ago, and we had like a little dinner party, and they threw it on. So I ended up just kind of like, “Oh my God.” And then getting into it, I watched most of the movie, and it’s a lot of fun. I love the dance sequence in it. I was watching all of us in that dance sequence. That was rough. And that was a lot of fun. That was a lot of fun.

Michelan Sisti: It was hard, but it was fun.

Mark Caso: I want to say my girls were like five years old or seven years old, something like that. So at least 15 years ago. It’s been a long time. It’s been a long time. So I’m going to see it this weekend up in Corvallis. There’s going to be a Q&A up there after in the AMC Corvallis at 7:00 PM. So I’m really looking forward to it.
