The Big Band Brasil Jazz Sinfônica takes the Blue Note stage tonight with “O Som Delas” — a concert dedicated to women who compose and arrange for large formations. Under the baton of maestro Gustavo Petri, the orchestra reframes jazz and Brazilian music through the lens of female authorship: Chiquinha Gonzaga’s “Lua Branca” — the work of the first woman to conduct an orchestra and direct recording sessions in Brazil — sits alongside Joyce Moreno’s “Feminina,” Débora Gurgel’s “Veredas,” Maria Schneider’s “Lembrança” and “Choro Cantado,” Toshiko Akiyoshi’s “American Ballad,” and Miho Hazama’s “Time River.” The selection emphasises women not merely as performers but as architects of sound — authors of melodies, harmonies and textures that define the big-band tradition. Twenty years after their first encounters in the Lapa samba scene in Rio de Janeiro, Verônica Ferriani and Alfredo Del-Penho reunite on stage for a show dedicated to Cartola — one of the greatest songwriters in Brazilian history. The repertoire draws from the full arc of Cartola’s catalogue: the immortal standards “O Mundo é um Moinho” and “As Rosas Não Falam” alongside deeper cuts like “Basta de Clamares Inocência” and “Pedem Socorro.” Ferriani and Del-Penho are both vocalists and researchers of samba — their interpretations carry the weight of two decades of lived immersion in the tradition. The show is an inédito production: never performed before tonight. Salão opens 20h, show at 22h. In the Porão, Você Vai Se Quiser — the samba group from São Mateus in the Zona Leste, rooted in the Cacique de Ramos tradition — runs two sessions at 17h and 21h. Saturday is Nave night at D-Edge — the weekly session that pushes deeper and more melodic than Friday’s Freak Chic, with programming that tends toward progressive house, melodic techno and immersive dancefloor journeys. The D-Edge’s LED-walled rooms, designed by Muti Randolph with KW Audio and Funktion-One sound, create a sensory environment that peaks between 1 and 5 am. Nave regularly features international headliners — check @dedgesp for tonight’s specific lineup and door time. The club sits on Avenida Auro Soares de Moura Andrade, 141, in Barra Funda — an industrial zone that D-Edge pioneered as a nightlife district when it opened in 2003. Saturday at the Bourbon Street brings “A Hard Dance Night: Blues Beatles” — the Beatles catalogue reimagined in blues format. “You Can’t Do That,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Yesterday,” “Help,” “Yellow Submarine,” “Ticket to Ride,” “Stand By Me” and the full breadth of the Lennon-McCartney songbook stripped down and rebuilt through blues guitar, shuffled rhythms and a rawer emotional register. The Bourbon Street’s Saturday programme starts early: the Jazz Café opens at 13h with three free sets (13h30, 15h, 16h30) on the New Orleans-inspired terrace — a daytime experience separate from the evening show. The main show begins at 22h. Couvert artístico R$85 first lot via Sympla. The Bourbon Street sits on Rua dos Chanés, 127, in Moema — the residential neighbourhood that rewards the journey with a quieter, more focused musical experience. 5Ó do Borogodó — Saturday Samba + Feijoada

Saturday is the Ó do Borogodó’s biggest day — a double-session programme that runs from afternoon feijoada to late-night samba. The feijoada session opens at 14h with a rotating Saturday afternoon artist and live samba through the afternoon. The evening transition brings the main programme from 22h to 3 am with a separate guest lineup. The cover is typically R$25 on Saturday nights, with the feijoada session charged separately (typically R$20 afternoon cover). The bar on Rua Horácio Lane, 21, in Pinheiros fills to overflowing on Saturday nights — arrive before 22h or accept standing room. Cold beer, caipirinhas, caldo de feijão, carne-seca com abóbora.
