For fans that have been sitting with the brutal third cancellation of S.W.A.T. the franchise will return, with a new spin-off. Not only that, but lead Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds) will return to reprise his role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson. According to Sony Pictures Television, the new series, S.W.A.T. EXILES, will consist of 10 episodes. The original S.W.A.T. series spanned 8 seasons before ultimately being cancelled for a third and final time back in March. Sony Pictures Television confirms that development of the series is currently underway, with production slated to begin in the summer. Jason Ning (Lucifer) will serve as showrunner.
“In this spin-off of the hit series, after a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.”
Shemar Moore Fought For More ‘S.W.A.T.’
After the cancellation in March, Moore took to social media to campaign for a way for the show, based on the 1975 television series of the same name, to continue. He told fans (and anyone who would listen “I don’t think you’re making the right choice.” He then started referencing specific networks by name, “Hey Netflix, how you doing?” He asks, appropriate with Netflix already streaming the first seven seasons of S.W.A.T. in the US. Moore goes on to say, “Let me just remind you that in a very short period of time, once upon a time ago… it took us about two weeks to go from number 15 to number one. And then we stayed in your top 10, top 15 for about six months, nine months, maybe a year. So Netflix, if you’re interested in a show that is on autopilot that the world is watching, we would love to come play.” He also wasn’t opposed to the series going to another network after the CBS cancellation saying, “NBC, Fox, ABC, hey, you want to come flirt with me? You’re invited to the barbecue. Pick your favorite restaurant. I will pay the bill.”
Now, with S.W.A.T. EXILES in the works, Moore says:
“My eight seasons on S.W.A.T. have been epic and memorable. We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide. I am excited for this next generation and iteration of S.W.A.T. with Sony. Katherine Pope, Neal H. Moritz, Jason Ning, and I will keep the franchise, thrill ride action, heartfelt drama, and storytelling of S.W.A.T. alive. WE DON’T LOSE!!!! ROLL SWAT!!!”
