One of the stars of Roseanne recently shared an anecdote wherein a stranger heckled her in public about her role on the show. Furthermore, the actress delved into how she was able to portray the character of Becky despite being relatively new to acting at the time.
Sarah Chalke details aftermath of replacing Lecy Goranson as Becky in Roseanne
During her recent appearance on the Dinner’s On Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson podcast, Sarah Chalke spoke about the public reception of her taking over the role of Becky on Roseanne in its sixth season. While she admitted there were many opinions, she revealed that a stranger heckled her for portraying the character once.
The Scrubs star began her story by saying that the incident happened at a Freedom Tibet rally, which she attended as a college student. “They yelled at me, and they were like, ‘I like the first Becky way better!’” the actress recalled. “And I was like, ‘Okay. Yeah, she was fantastic. I agree. She was great.’”
“He came back, and he was like, ‘Hey, I just want to apologize. I always wanted to yell at an actor, and you were here. So, I’m sorry, and I didn’t mean it,” the Playdate actress continued. “I was like, ‘Oh, thank you for clarifying.’”
The Firefly Lane actress then went on to explain that she believed the only reason she was able to go and do the job was that she had been so naive and hadn’t fully understood the situation. She said that she had comprehended it a little, but not in the way she would now. As a result, she described herself as “pretty young and naive,” which made it easier to even attend the audition.
Chalke took over the role of Rebecca “Becky” Conner during Roseanne Season 6 after Lecy Goranson left the show. She portrayed the character for seasons 6 and 7, before Goranson returned for Season 8. During that time, Chalke appeared in a few supporting roles on the show.
However, due to Goranson’s scheduling conflict, Chalke reprised the role of Becky for several episodes. Chalke then played Becky throughout Season 9 and later appeared as a different character, Andrea, in Season 10.
