Debut set to drop in July
Poor Creature, the Irish psyche folk trio made up of members of Landless and Lankum, are teasing a new album with an animated promo for a song about a 19th century Belfast forger.
‘Adieu Lovely Erin’ is taken from their debut album ‘All Smiles Tonight’, set for release on July 11 via Rough Trade imprint River Lea Records. “This song tells the true story of William Hill, a forger from Belfast who was transported to Australia in 1826,” explain the band, “The video, animated by Ruth (Clinton from the band), visits some iconic Irish landscapes as well as a few of the band’s former Dublin haunts.”
Among other dates (see below), Poor Creature play an instore at Rough Trade East in London on July 14, Supersonic Festival on August 31 and Subtereanean Festival at the London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sept 20, supporting Lisa O’Neill.
Comprised of Ruth Clinton, Cormac MacDiarmada and John Dermody, the band’s combination of dense psychedelic patterns and traditional Irish folk sounds is unique. “There’s something about the everyday and the fantastical, being entangled, which I think Irish music does so well” explains Ruth. This also sums up All Smiles Tonight, moving through stories and loss and history to create an otherworldly and timeless album for the ages.”
The forthcoming album, said to be drawn together by a unifying theme of loss and separation, also includes a version of ‘The Whole Town Knows’ (a Ray Lynam & Philomena Begley track), transformed from a song about cheating hearts into a 21st century ecological rallying cry. “It talks about how we can’t go on living this way, which became a metaphor for the climate crisis and the general destruction of the planet.”
