This is Tour Diary, where artists give us a behind-the-scenes look at life on the road. Beauty School Dropout formed in 2020 when frontman Colie Hutzler asked a girl to hang out over DMs and befriended her boyfriend, bassist Brent “Beepus” Burdett, instead. After meeting guitarist Bardo Novotny through a show at Winston House in Venice, the band settled into a natural chemistry and have been recording together since. The SoCal group blend alt-rock, emo, and hip-hop into a hooky whole, most recently heard across their new album, WHERE DID ALL THE BUTTERFLIES GO? Considering that they received an early co-sign from blink-182’s Mark Hoppus, it only makes sense that the pop-punk veterans brought them on their Missionary Impossible tour. Beauty School Dropout opened their recent arena shows, where they played their new songs, took in the views, and occasionally broke a snare drum. Below, they guided us through some of their favorite moments.

The Dropouts go back to college. We had an off day on the blink run, so we drove eight hours to go play a college show for Penn State Behrend. The crowd threw down way harder than we expected. The Dare was also playing the show, which was awesome ’cause we’re fans of his music. Got to meet and hang for a bit.
