‘New Mutants’ Director Speaks On ‘Traumatic’ Experience Developing The ‘X-Men’ Movie

The New Mutants director has sworn of the X-Men! Josh Boone finally speaks out on his experience filming one of Marvel’s most controversial films.

New Mutants truly never had a chance. The project was a last gasp of an X-Men reboot that was cut short by studio merger. This, on top of a global pandemic, set the movie up to faceplant when it finally arrived in theaters in late 2020, likely only saved from streaming due to a number of contracts signed by director Josh Boone early on in the process.

While one may see countless delays as a dream scenario for a director to refine their vision, Josh Boone saw it as anything but. He recently spoke out about his experience working on New Mutants in an interview with The Direct. His experience working with the X-Men was apparently “traumatic”, even in spite of how much he loved the cast.

“It’s so hard because it was so traumatic. The studio was sold, and we hit a pandemic… The studio was sold during the shooting, and then the pandemic happened when they decided to release it. And it just was such a — I had a wonderful time. I love the cast so much, but making that… It took so many years, and it was so unfulfilling, ultimately.”

Will New Mutants Get A BooneCut?

Of course, New Mutants is far from the first film to suffer from studio interference and outside factors. While the X-Men themselves have suffered this fate many times, perhaps the most famous example of this is Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Josh Boone was asked if there was any interest in returning to the world of mutants, to which the director admitted he had very little interest- even if it meant fixing the New Mutants film.

“We didn’t really get to make the movie we wanted to make. We made half the movie we wanted to make. And the release was so compromised by the pandemic… I’d rather just never do it again, just to be honest.”

It’s a true shame that Josh Boone was never able to bring his vision of the New Mutants to life on the silver screen. However, with the X-Men now under the control of Disney and with a new director, fans have hope that the future of the mutant team is in better hands. Hopefully the team, even if without their director, will get a chance to shine once more someday soon!

The New Mutants is now available on all home media formats. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the X-Men and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
