Netflix seems to offer a highly acclaimed historical that is seemingly better than even some of the best movies of the genre. The show in question premiered in 2015 and had a strong 5-season run. It even boasts an impressive 91% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and is based on a well-known book series.

The biggest problem with most historical dramas is that they often try to oversimplify complex history to be more digestible for audiences. Or, some shows of the genre even attempt to romanticize the past and overemphasize spectacle instead of finding the balance between storytelling and authenticity.

Fortunately, Netflix has one brilliant historical series that overcomes almost all the shortcomings that weigh down most shows of the genre. Arguably, the five-season show is so good that it deserves to rank above almost all historical movies that are available for streaming on Netflix.

The Last Kingdom Is A Must-Watch Series On Netflix

First episode of The Last Kingdom

Based on The Saxon Stories novel series by Bernard Cornwell, The Last Kingdom first immerses viewers into its drama through its realistic set pieces and costume designs. Everything from the characters’ make-up to the show’s action choreography ensures that its portrayal of history feels authentic.

As the story of the series progresses, it delivers layered character beats, compelling political drama, and memorable performances. In its early story threads, it is hard not to compare the show with the likes of Game of Thrones and Vikings. However, beyond the season 1 mark, The Last Kingdom starts etching its own unique identity with its exploration of themes of destiny and loyalty.

Many shows, regardless of their genre, experience a massive sophomore slump after having strong openings. Netflix’s The Last Kingdom, however, stands as an exception and only gets better with time. While the show’s extreme violence can be a bit of a turn-off for some viewers, others will likely appreciate how it adds to its realism.

Why The Last Kingdom Is Even Better Than Most Historical Epic Movies

Like most historical dramas, The Last Kingdom does not try to be completely accurate. It takes many creative liberties just to be able to enhance the impact of its own storytelling. However, the show still finds creative ways to keep itself grounded and convince viewers of its authenticity.

The Last Kingdom was primarily filmed in Hungary.

For instance, almost all the characters in The Last Kingdom are based on real figures, and even the show’s portrayal of the shield wall battles in season 1 is not too far from real history. Owing to these foundational historical accuracies, Netflix’s The Last Kingdom feels immersive and believable, making it one of the best offerings in the historical drama genre and far better than several historical films.
