Despite plenty of options currently available to fans of espionage films and shows, an unlikely title is leaving them all behind. Tom Hiddleston returned after a decade to star in the second season of The Night Manager, which has been doing tremendously well for Prime Video over the last 50 days or so; on Peacock, Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson can be seen as Cold War-era spies in the new series Ponies. Gary Oldman and his crew are still drawing large audiences over on Apple TV with their long-running hit Slow Horses. But it’s Netflix that’s currently winning out with a new show that is arguably the least accessible of the lot. The show in question has been sneaking up on rivals, while maintaining a spot for itself on the global Netflix charts.
According to FlixPatrol, it was the fifth-most-watched show on the streamer on Friday, when The Night Agent claimed the number one spot. The Night Agent recently returned for a third season, and edged past the recently released Bridgerton Season 4 to claim the crown. Meanwhile, the six-episode spy thriller managed to outperform the fourth season of The Lincoln Lawyer, the latest run of Love Is Blind, and the fellow international title Lead Children.
Here’s the New Netflix Spy-Thriller Taking Streaming by Storm
The show in question is Unfamiliar, starring Susanne Wolff and Felix Kramer as a married couple yanked back into their past lives as secret agents. When an unexpected threat rears its head, they must face off against various enemies while trying to save their family. Unfamiliar became a sleeper hit on Netflix, having premiered on February 5. The show currently holds an 83% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, indicating broadly positive critical reception. In a piece for Collider, Giovana Gelhoren wrote that Unfamiliar is “filled with action-packed moments, a plethora of unexpected mysteries and a couple’s love for each other and their family at its heart. With authentic performances to tell the story, and a sharp direction throughout, Unfamiliar is the type of series that will have viewers from around the world gripped, one episode at a time.” You can watch the show on Netflix.
