The success of Stranger Things has been monumental for Netflix over the years, but now, they’ve potentially gotten their hands on a much larger franchise that could take its place going forward. With the news that Netflix has agreed to purchase and take over Warner Bros., there are some major changes about to occur in the entertainment industry.
While the two companies appear to be very different, both are concerned with creating great TV and films that keep audiences coming back, and Stranger Things has done well in achieving this for Netflix over the past decade.
Harry Potter Will Be On Netflix If The Warner Bros. Merger Goes Through
The acquisition of Warner Bros. couldn’t have come at a better time for Netflix, as Stranger Things is currently releasing its final season in three parts. With that in mind, the streaming giant needs to look ahead to what could serve as a worthy replacement for the Duffer brothers’ viral nostalgic hit, and WB has just dropped a major franchise into their lap that is perfect for filling that slot.
Harry Potter is a global phenomenon that had remarkable success with the original films, and then continued to grow with the Wizarding World films, which continued to earn big at the box office. And in recent years, WB has been focused on creating a new television series adapting the stories, which is well into production of the first season, ready to release in 2027.
With the merger, it makes sense that this show will now be released on Netflix, assuming HBO’s streaming service gets absorbed into its new parent company.
Netflix Will Soon Own Some Of The Biggest Entertainment IPs In History
But Harry Potter isn’t the only popular IP that Netflix is getting its hands on. WB holds the rights to the Monsterverse, The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, and so much more.
Evidently, Netflix will be spoiled for choice on what project they want to develop in order to expand their offerings and grow their library with some of the biggest brands in entertainment history.
The Harry Potter Show Could Be One Of Netflix’s Flagship Properties After The Merger
Right now, the acquisition is being reported to take somewhere between 12–18 months to be completed. This lines up well with the 2027 release set for the first season of the new Harry Potter series.
Fans of Stranger Things are used to waiting a few years between releases, and while this story is different in many ways, the fact that it focuses on young misfit heroes as they embrace a world of magic and intrigue is aligned with some of the best parts of Stranger Things.
However, with so many new options set to appear on Netflix after the merger is completed, there will be plenty of shows that could take the flagship position of Stranger Things for Netflix alongside the new Harry Potter show.
