Stranger Things has finally closed the gate, and while the fandom is split on how it all went down, Millie Bobby Brown feels at peace with where Eleven ends up.
The actor recently opened up about the emotional finale, sharing why Eleven’s fate worked for her, even though she also has a soft spot for a very different version of events told through Mike’s eyes.
In the back half of the Season 5 finale, Eleven makes the ultimate call. She stays inside the gate as Hopper’s bomb detonates, wiping out the Upside Down and everything inside it, including herself.
Speaking to Tudum, Brown explained why that moment landed so strongly for her. Eleven’s decision, she said, was “so beautiful and cathartic,” and something she had hoped for her character for a “very long time.”
The sacrifice isn’t just about stopping the immediate threat. By choosing to stay behind, Eleven ensures that Dr. Kay or anyone else can never exploit her abilities again, removing the possibility of another gate ever being opened.
Brown went on to say: “I just think it’s incredibly important that it all ends for her, and the suffering and the pain end,” she said.
Still, Stranger Things doesn’t leave things entirely closed off. In the epilogue, Mike Wheeler refuses to accept that Eleven is gone. He tells the group a different story, one where Kali projected an image of Eleven at the gate while the real El slipped away unseen.
In Mike’s imagined version of events, we see Eleven living quietly in Iceland, visiting the waterfalls they once talked about together. Brown admits that alternate ending hit her in a different way. “I kinda love that ending, that there is just such a bigger purpose to Kali’s powers,” she added.
So what’s the truth? Is Eleven really dead, or did she escape? The Duffer brothers said they intentionally left Eleven’s fate ambiguous, allowing viewers to decide what they believe happened. They also confirmed that only they and Brown know the real answer.
Not everyone involved sees it as a mystery, though. Sadie Sink shared her own take during an appearance on The Tonight Show, telling host Jimmy Fallon, “I think she’s dead… I think, like, Mike’s story is just one last story.”
Whether you lean toward Eleven’s sacrifice being final or prefer Mike’s hopeful version, Brown’s comments make it clear that both interpretations were designed to matter to fans.
One brings closure and peace. The other keeps a small door open.
