Are Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter finally canon (again)? Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum teases his hopes to make their ABC slate canon to the MCU.
Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter have always sat in an interesting place when it comes to being canon in the MCU. The shows were originally pitched as completely canon, filling in the gaps between key films such as Avengers: Age of Ultron. Yet as the years went on, and Marvel got more involved with Netflix and even started planning their own streaming service, the studio began to slowly distance themselves from the series. For a time, they tried to ignore that the projects were ever canon at all!
Now it seems Marvel is once more planning to take their fans to Tahiti. When speaking on the canon of their ABC shows like Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter, Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation at Marvel Studios Brad Winderbaum revealed that he has high hopes to square the timeline of those shows with the current MCU.
“Well, I’ll tell you this, and put it to you like this,” Winderbaum spoke to ScreenRant. “It’s exciting for me to think about how to square those ABC shows with the canon. That, to me, if you know me and the way my brain works, that is fun territory to imagine.”
How Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Fits Into The MCU
Some would imagine that it’s pretty simple to just slap the “canon” label on Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter and call it a day, especially given the shows were originally meant to be canon. However, as Marvel distanced the MCU from the series, the shows too distanced itself from the MCU. This included massive status quo changes such as a worldwide terrigenesis, the debut of the Darkhold, and the Earth literally being torn apart.
It’s possible that, with some work, many of these bumps could be squared away. Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. may even provide Marvel a way out of their controversial decision to make Kamala Khan a mutant in the MCU by simply saying she was an unknowing victim of the mass terrigenesis. However, given the studio is ready to enter an era of mutants, it’s unclear how much time they’ll have to untie this Gordian knot.
