Kylie Jenner was a 2010s icon — but she didn’t even know it back then!
On Instagram‘s Close Friends Only podcast, Kylie sat down with her The Moment costar Charli XCX to talk all things nostalgia. Of course, we all know that Kylie was the King of 2016 — no doubt about it! But when the Apple singer asked her about it on Tuesday? She admitted she didn’t always see it like that.
She was on The Kardashians starting at just 10 years old back in 2007! Managing fame was just always a part of her life, she explained, and she’s trying to not be so hard on herself about her past:
“Being in the public eye so young, I think I look back and I have so much grace for myself. I didn’t even really know at the time how much power I held — or trends I was setting.”
We were all there for the well-known trends (and controversies) stirred up by Mz. Jenner. From her iconic blue and pink hair looks, to her Coachella days, to her Kylie Cosmetics lip kits and the infamous “Kylie Jenner lip challenge”.
But even before all that she was the “cool girl” among peers her age — not to mention super hip on Tumblr! Yeah, remember Tumblr?

All of that was something she had to navigate as just a teen — and she says she tries to take it “easy” on herself when looking back:
“I just try to be easy on myself and not expect this 16-year-old or 17-year-old to know all the right things to say — or do. I wasn’t holding back, I definitely — nothing was intentional. I was just being myself.”
And just like everyone else who’s grown up, there are certain things the 28-year-old is ready to leave in the past:
“[King Kylie] will always be a part of who I am, but it’ll never be what it was when I was younger. I probably would never wear lash extensions and thick eyebrows. There are just certain trends that I’ve grown out of.”
