Is Peacemaker the key to the DC Universe? James Gunn suggests that season 2 of the beloved series may be the key to discovering the overarching plot of the franchise.
With Superman smashing all expectations at the box office, the future of the DC Universe is looking brighter than ever. This means that fans have already begun to speculate what it’s all leading up to. Namely, who the “big bad” is in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the interconnected franchise, in the same vein of a character like Loki or Thanos.
This left many disappointed when the post-credits scenes for Superman rolled and there was no tease for what will be coming in the future of the DC Universe. There wasn’t even a hint at if the events of the film will play into Peacemaker season 2! Though it seems this was on purpose. Speaking to Screen Rant, James Gunn revealed that he wants to avoid setting up plot threads he can’t follow through on in future projects.
“Well, I found in my time at Marvel…first of all, the post-credits scenes of mine in Marvel that people liked the best were the stupid ones. Howard the Duck at the end of Guardians and Stan Lee at the end of Guardians 2. And I’ve said it before but I’ve set up things at the post-credits scenes, and Marvel has set up things in the post-credits scenes that never pay off.”
“And unless it’s really for sure gonna pay off. Like if we were- you know, we know what the Supergirl movie is. So if it was a pay off at the end of the credits that had to do with something in the Supergirl movie I would be open to that because we know that’s happening. But I don’t want to set up stuff just because it’s a shocking post-credits scene that we’re never gonna pay off.”
“However, I do like giving the audience something for having stuck around through the credits and seeing who all the hardworking people are on the film. And so giving them something, I think, is fun and that’s what I do.”
How Peacemaker Sets Up The DC Universe’s Future
However, while Superman didn’t set up new threads for the DC Universe, it seems as though Peacemaker might. In a separate interview with the outlet, James Gunn teased that there is something bigger planned for the franchise. And while he can’t say what, fans may begin to piece the puzzle together if they take the time to watch season 2 of John Cena’s superhero series.
“I do know whose story it is. And it probably isn’t anyone [you] would ever expect. And it’s not what anyone thinks. It’s not what anyone would guess. But I think that if people watch the next season of Peacemaker, they’ll see where a lot of these things are going, and have a little bit more of a sense of maybe what can happen.”
While many would assume that James Gunn is talking about Peacemaker here, one shouldn’t be so sure. Given the characters that’ll appear in both Superman and season 2 of the series, it’s more likely that the DC Universe’s “big event” will put the focus on Rick Flag Sr. Frank Grillo’s army soldier also held a starring role in the franchise’s freshman project, Creature Commandos, meaning the first saga could be a full circle moment for the character.
Peacemaker season 2 is set to release on August 21, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
