Having played in theaters for over a month, Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is closing in on what will likely be its last domestic box office milestone. With $181 million in the bank so far, the mega-budget action movie doesn’t have much gas left in the tank; the more packed that the marketplace gets, the more theaters it will have to relinquish. Thanks to its Wednesday gross of over $800,000, however, the movie has overtaken two past hits starring Tom Cruise. It also overtook the highest-grossing concert movie of all time.
With $181 million, The Final Reckoning is now among the 300 highest-grossing movies in domestic box office history. On Wednesday, it overtook the original Top Gun, and the original Mission: Impossible. Both movies concluded their runs with $180 million apiece; of course, this number would be much higher adjusted for inflation. The Final Reckoning also shot past the first Thor, as well as Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour. With $180 million domestically and nearly $270 million worldwide, it remains the top-grossing concert film in history.
The Eras Tour film debuted in 2023, and grossed a massive $93 million in its first weekend. The Final Reckoning, on the other hand, generated around $80 million in its extended four-day domestic debut. The movie needs to pass the $200 million mark in the next few days, if only to save face. It reportedly cost $400 million to produce, making it one of the most expensive films of all time, and an incredibly difficult one for Paramount to turn theatrically profitable. Globally, it’s on the verge of passing the $550 million mark, which is nowhere near good enough for a movie this expensive. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, The Final Reckoning was marketed as the last installment of the long-running action series; it opened to divisive reviews, and currently stands at an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Cruise Is Looking Forward to a Career Pivot
This weekend, The Final Reckoning should also overtake Jurassic Park III, Lincoln, and The Revenant. Incidentally, Cruise is next teaming up with The Revenant director Alejandro González Iñárritu on an untitled new film, marking a major departure for the star, who’s been working in the franchise space for the last decade. You can watch The Final Reckoning in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
