Heartbreak is tearing through a fandom right now after Tell Me Lies showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer took to social media to announce that the show’s newly dropped Season 3 finale would actually serve as its series finale. The ending of a popular series is always tough for audiences to grasp, but it’s arguably better for the creatives to pull the plug on their own terms rather than run a once beloved story into the ground. This year alone, fans were already preparing themselves for the planned endings of favorites such as Eric Kripke and Prime Video’s The Boys and Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke’s Netflix teen drama, Outer Banks, so the shock ending of Tell Me Lies has certainly been a gut punch.
Over three seasons, the title has charted the course of a group of college-aged friends, moving backwards and forwards on a timeline that shows how they’ve changed and — more importantly — not changed in nearly a decade. While the series largely focuses on the shockingly toxic dynamic between Grace Van Patten’s Lucy Albright and Jackson White’s Stephen DeMarco, the series finale culminated in a knock-down drag-out fight between the group of frenemies at the wedding of Bree (Catherine Missal) and Evan (Branden Cook).
For many fans, the ending of Tell Me Lies was a satisfying one, with Oppenheimer and the rest of the creative team praised for rounding out the drama-heavy story first penned by Carola Lovering in her 2018 novel of the same name. But, for others, the shock that came with discovering Season 3 served as the grand finale was a bit too much to handle. Taking to social media to share their upset, followers flocked to the comment section of Oppenheimer’s Instagram post, from which she shared the news that the Season finale was — in fact — the series finale.
A Fandom Divided
Cast members, including Tom Ellis, and even famous fans like Vanderpump Rules alum, Stassi Schroeder, were nothing but supportive of Oppenheimer’s seemingly game-time decision. Sadly, not everyone shared the positive sentiments. One user, @ginapontarelli_, called out Oppenheimer for her very on-theme way of handling the news, writing, “The fact that this was dropped on us at 9 pm is giving Stephen DeMarco level toxic,” while @juusttaylor wrote, “Nothing will be answered we have so many unfinished storylines like come on.” Another account, @beccagallagher, echoed what many shared about wishing for more of a complete story, adding, “If it was the last season maybe you should’ve made more than 8 episodes 4 of which were filler.”
Whether you support Oppenheimer’s choice or not, Tell Me Lies has officially come to a screeching halt with all episodes now streaming on Hulu. Check out the showrunner’s official farewell post above.
