This is not the kind of shakeup anyone at ABC wanted, and certainly not the kind that comes quietly.
The sudden collapse of The Bachelorette’s latest season that was supposed to be fronted by Taylor Frankie Paul has left a very visible hole in the network’s schedule and an even bigger cloud hanging over the franchise. And now, in the immediate aftermath, the network is scrambling to steady itself.

For this Sunday at least, ABC is opting for familiarity over risk: according to a brand-new report from TMZ late on Thursday night, a rerun of American Idol will slide into the now-vacant time slot on March 22, giving viewers an unexpected extra dose of the long-running singing competition.
It’s a temporary fix, and not a long-term solution, FYI. Insiders told the news outlet that network executives are still very much in the weeds trying to figure out what comes next for the remainder of the scrapped season.
The decision comes on the heels of a deeply troubling chain of events that unfolded at lightning speed, as we’ve been reporting.
Earlier in the day on Thursday, a resurfaced 2023 video showing Taylor in a heated and physical altercation with her child’s father, Dakota Mortensen, sent shockwaves through the production. Within hours, the entire season was pulled. No gradual distancing, no drawn-out deliberation. Just a full stop.
A spokesperson for Disney Entertainment addressed the decision directly right after the season was pulled, as you’ll no doubt already recall, by saying this to the media:
“In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of The Bachelorette at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family.”
And that’s where the tone shifts from shocking to sobering, because beyond the programming shuffle and financial implications, there are real people at the center of this. Taylor is also facing a fresh domestic violence allegation tied to an incident in February involving Dakota, though she has maintained that he was the aggressor in that situation. It’s complicated, messy, and far from resolved.

Behind the scenes, the fallout is already turning into a blame game. And yes, the financial hit is significant. Entire productions don’t just vanish without consequences.
For now, ABC is leaning on a safe bet to fill the silence. But the bigger question remains unanswered: what ultimately replaces a season that never got the chance to begin?
