Glen Powell’s new Stephen King remake recently wrapped up its first full weekend in theaters, and it didn’t take The Running Man long to pass another legendary sci-fi film. During its opening weekend, The Running Man earned $17 million at the domestic box office and $11.1 million in international markets for a global total of $28.1 million. While this certainly wasn’t enough to earn back its $100 million budget, it was enough to push it past the original Dune movie (1984) by director David Lynch, which grossed $28 million at the box office, mostly thanks to domestic earnings.
The Running Man also passed the original Tron movie at the box office during its first weekend in theaters, which comes while Disney’s legacy threequel, Tron: Ares, continues to struggle financially. In the coming days, The Running Man will look to overtake Borderlands, 2024’s massive flop that grossed only $32 million globally against a $115 million budget. The Running Man (2025) is a remake of the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film of the same name, which grossed $38 million globally. Powell’s version of the Stephen King story will likely pass this during its second weekend at the box office.
What makes The Running Man’s underwhelming opening weekend even more surprising is the film’s star-studded cast. Starring alongside Powell in the action/sci-fi film is Lee Pace as Evan McCone, Katy O’Brian as Jenni Laughlin, Josh Brolin as Dan Killian, Colman Domingo as Bobby T, William H. Macy as Molie, and more. The film was written and directed by Edgar Wright. Fans have been proclaiming over the last week that Wright has lost a step as a filmmaker due to The Running Man’s reception.
Is ‘The Running Man’ Worth Watching?
The Running Man has earned mediocre scores of 65% from critics and 79% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. This is just good enough to avoid a Rotten label, but not quite in a high enough tier to be awarded a Certified Fresh or Verified Hot badge. The film is currently sitting in the middle with tons of divisive reviews, which may not bode well for its longevity at the box office. Still, fans of the original Arnold Schwarzenegger film or just those who enjoy action or sci-fi movies are sure to have a good time with The Running Man, if nothing else.
