The Game of Thrones TV franchise may have begun with an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, but’s it’s expanded far beyond its origins all these years later. The first expansion came in the form of House of the Dragon, a prequel that expanded with a story focused on Westeros’ most powerful and complicated family, the Targaryens. The second expansion began the year in 2026 for HBO, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is a much more focused tale following the chivalrous knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, a young Targaryen boy named Egg.
Although George R.R. Martin is the mind behind the novels that have inspired all three Game of Thrones shows, that doesn’t mean he has the best relationship with all the creatives. Martin recently went public with his issues with House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal, saying that his notes on the show are often ignored. House of the Dragon Season 1 was met with critical acclaim, but most fans feel Season 2 fell short of high expectations. Things could not be more different for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, though, which Martin has coined his favorite Game of Thrones show.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already been renewed for Season 2, and production on the second season is underway. Recent reports indicate Martin has already visited the set of Season 2 and is happy with the progress showrunner Ira Parker and the crew are making. It’s also been confirmed that Martin gave Parker and the writing team more Dunk and Egg stories to continue the show beyond the three published novels.
What Is ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ About?
Other Game of Thrones shows tell a more overarching story of wars between families, but A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a tale on a much smaller scale. The series picks up with Ser Duncan the Tall, a former squire turned knight after the death of his former knight, Ser Arlan of Pennytree. Duncan takes it upon himself to enter a tourney to prove his knighthood to the realm, and along the way, he picks up a young Aegon Targaryen, who is hiding away and posing as a lowly squire.
