In a compelling real-life twist to an already potent family drama, acclaimed actor Gary Webster will share the stage with his son Freddie Webster in “Blessings”, a new play by Sarah Shelton opening at Riverside Studios this autumn. The world premiere runs from 30 September to 26 October 2025, marking Freddie’s professional stage debut in a production already drawing attention for its emotionally charged premise and powerhouse casting.

Produced by Artful Entertainment, “Blessings” is a darkly humorous and poignant exploration of family, faith, and long-buried truths. Set in a small English town in the 1960s, the play centers on the Deacon household, where the veneer of Catholic respectability is cracking under the weight of secrets, guilt, and generational tension. As the family reunites for Easter, hidden fractures are exposed and the question looms: is truth worth the cost?

Gary Webster, best known for his roles in “Minder”, “Family Affairs”, and decades of appearances across British television, will take on the role of Frank Deacon, the quietly observant patriarch whose silence speaks volumes. In a poetic casting parallel, his real-life son Freddie steps into the role of Martin, Frank’s son in the play, mirroring the intergenerational themes at the heart of the story.

“As soon as I read the play “Blessings” by Sarah Shelton I knew that I wanted to do it,” said Gary Webster. “To work on a great script with such terrific actors is the reason why I became an actor. Throwing in the fact that I’ll be working with my son Freddie on his professional theatrical debut makes this opportunity all the more exciting. I can’t wait to get started.”

Joining the Websters are Jane Slavin (“Call the Midwife”) as the commanding matriarch Dorie Deacon, Hannah Traylen (“Boiling Point”) as the rebellious Frances, Milly Roberts as sharp-tongued Penny, and Freya Taylor-Lester as the observant youngest daughter, Sally. The ensemble brings together seasoned performers and rising talents to breathe life into Shelton’s blisteringly honest script.

Sarah Shelton, who also directs the production, initially debuted “Blessings” in a shorter form during the 2024 Riverside Bitesize Festival to enthusiastic response. The full-length version promises to delve even deeper into its exploration of family dynamics, generational trauma, and the societal expectations of a “respectable” household.

“Blessings” promises to be a riveting, emotionally layered theatrical event—both a searing critique of family facades and a deeply personal milestone for the Websters. With previews beginning 30 September, the show is already generating early interest, not just for its storyline, but for the unique bond it brings to the stage.

Tickets are now on sale here, with performances running Tuesdays through Sundays at Riverside Studios, 101 Queen Caroline Street, Hammersmith, London (venue fully wheelchair accessible).
